I'll say that there IS a legal, economical option for the little guy who wants to get a Rick. It's called working hard and saving money, basic economics. Scouring the earth for a good deal is also a viable option...

Agreed. This is a great option and historically those of us outside of the US with a 65 to 80 cent US dollar have made very good use of the excellent quality of used Rickenbackers.

Talking about the reissue of any of the Rickenbacker models of the past, such as the 4000, is a great topic. It is a fine subject area for another thread.

You an buy Ferrari kits to get the look, You can buy watches modeled after Rolexs and you can get bags with Gucci (styled) patterns.

Nick, your analogy falls a bit short, I would think.

Try passing off any of these product lines you have mentioned as an original and you may get a knock at your door sooner then you might imagine.

Someone gave me one of those Rolex fakers a few years back. It looked just like the real deal, except...after about a week the second hand started running backwards.

That's the thing, these things aren't being passed off as the original, I'm not talking about the 25$ Time Square Special you can get, I'm talking about genuine watches and handbags that have styles reminiscent of Rolex's or Gucci Bag, either by having a similar 3 dial face, or Gucci stupid looking repeated pattern thing.

I think you guys are getting confused as to what I was referring too, building something that resembles another doesn't imply it being passed off as that product.

Umm, we've retrenched a bit, Nick, as I see you're no longer mentioning "buying Ferrari kits". It is just as illegal to purchase or sell a fake Ferrari (MacBurnie being a good example). Driving a car with pseudo-Ferrari styling--usually done in poor quality by an amateur, anyway--marks a person as a deluded joker. And does anyone remember those fake Rolls-Royces built on Chevy Monte Carlos back in the '70s? "Custom Clouds", they were called, and R-R shut them down for good pretty quickly.

Backwards Rickenbacker can sound really cool!

Have they shut down the Ferrari Body kits? Good Riddance, they didn't look very much like Ferrari's to begin with, and no way will your Pontiac Fiero with a Ferrari looking body be any cool!
