That is exactly what
RIC does
not need at the moment if they want to get the BOs under control.

Sorry, but I don't buy into that school of thought. You don't run a successful business by trying to prevent sales of your product. There other ways to reduce the backlog without discouraging new orders. Let's face it, the worldwide economic situation is affecting all of us...we're all feeling the crunch and I don't think the musical instrument market is going to come away unscathed, either. Sales are down. There are a lot of folks who'd consider purchasing or ordering a special color run from RIC, who otherwise wouldn't be looking to buy an instrument at all...I'm thinking of enthusiasts and collectors in particular. I'm sure RIC welcomes any and all new orders, backlog or no.
I can only speak for myself, but I'd most likely order a COY guitar if the color is an interesting one. There's a Rick model I've been jonesin' for for a while, but I've been holding off because, to be honest, I really don't
need it. A new color choice would probably be the thing that would get me to finally open my wallet for this guitar. And there may be others who feel the same way.
Just my $0.02

On the corporate forum I once read JH saying that this was a miserable failure. I'm not sure why, but at least they tried, apparently.

The truth is, I know nothing about how to run a good business and I do not know how RIC should be managed--I just play their instruments. And what motivates me is the sound more than the look, since I already really admire 3 of the 4 standard finishes, so generally when there is buzz about COY, I think, "Oof, this is going to increase 'collecting' and drive up demand, and I'm a player, therefore it's me vs. them." [Well, you get the idea.] But other people shouldn't have to suffer just because I myself don't want to pay a little extra for a COY. (Is anyone catching the irony that both of my basses are COYs? It's just random luck I swear...)
If RIC could do COYs without increasing the backlog, they probably will, and it'll probably look great. Props to them if so.

Maybe they'll skip the COY, and continue in the direction of bringing back the vintage features.
Checker binding?????

A dealer on the east coast has had an amber mapleglo 330/12 for sale for some time. Nice guitar but personally, I can't tell
the difference between it and a regular mapleglo.

+1. At that point a stock 4003 would be close enough to a V68 for my tastes. I might have to hock my car, wedding ring or somethin' to get one.

I'd like to see them bring back "S" models with contoured wings and dot inlays. That'd do the trick for me.

Actually Jeff your Jetglo really does it for me, I've been wanting compliment you for quite some time. (nice match for the 4005).
The checker binding would just be icing on the cake.
I'd probably have to go with fireglo or mapleglo though,, I just hate to see those beautiful walnut wings covered up.

CB would be nice, but, as you said it does go well with the 4005WB, which has no CB.
