I met Jason How (Mr. Rotosound Jnr.) at the Music Live Show in Birmingham (UK!) earlier this year.
I mentioned that (its tempting fate isnt it?) the quality of RS66LD strings these days far outstrips the ones of yesteryear for consistency.
I have never used any other make (bar occaisional dabblings to check out the advertising hyperbole) since the early 70s so
theres been plenty of time for me to make a judgement.
What Jason told me (and I did say that all the tech stuff in magazines tends to get like soap powder ads) was that
the computer controlled machines these days ensure the consistency that in the 70s they could only dream of.
That goes for all strings and makes I imagine and for once...digital gets it right for a change.

Oh, and yes he did me a few sets after all that buttering up!

Well,

As usual, I'm behind....I have a fresh set of ROTO"s on hand, thanks John & CJ....at a much more reasonable price....and I'm going to install them on my V63.

I've converted to DR Highbeams a few years back but I do miss that classic CLANK sound.

NOW, where can I purchase PLAY LIKE CHRIS SQUIRE in a can or spray?

I have only ever used RS strings. Tried others briefly but always came back. Had a couple of dead strings about 4-5 years ago, never any dead ones since. Have had a couple of strings that rattled between the windings, like the core and the outer winding were not bound. This only ever happened on A strings.

Whenever I string I make sure to wind around the post in the correct manner, to almost the right length - then I hold the nut end of the string and make sure there are no twists. I have had twisty strings before and they never come right, especially if your bridge doesn't allow rotation of the bobbin. I have also noticed the strange vibration effect, fun to watch with a backdrop of TV screen reflecting on the bass body.

Usually pay $45-50 in Australia for a set of these babies. Even the extra long scale and heavy gauge versions don't cost much more. Compare that to DR and other brands that fetch $65 or more.

Where is Chris when you need a question answered? Did Chris use Rotos on his 8 string basses?

Ben,

Just under $34 AUD for two sets there. Shipping USPS is not all that much.

Damn that's good! And here I was thinking I got a reasonable deal. I may save $5 a set by ordering online. I guess it depends on how famous I get and how many sets I go through. By ordering online it means I don't go visit my friendly music shop - even though they don't have a lot (ie Rickenbackers or many toys to play with) they are a great bunch to gasbag with.

There is that. One reason I drop into The Bass Place in Scottsdale, AZ - always good conversation.
