Well, the point of my earlier post wasn't to brag about number of mouse buttons, merely to respond to the "Macs only have one mouse button" charge, which I find tiresome considering that plenty of USB mice will work with a Mac, and that's what many Mac users do. Myself, I bought a Logitech mouse when I bought my Mac Mini.

I've thought about buying a Mighty Mouse, but I've read unfavorable reviews of them on Mac-related forums.

There is anti-virus software out there, it's just not getting shoved down anyone's throat yet. I had to get it because it was required when I worked for KU--it remains on my PowerBook to this day.

I didn't get a Mac for the "virus free" hype--that's BS, just like you say. If you wanted to hack into a Mac you could do it faster than a PC because the Unix-base is easier to get into--also why it runs smoother I suppose.

But I did get it because I F***KING HATE WINDOWS. Ten years of hell, I could probably write a book about it. My only fear is that as soon as Macs do become a bigger target for hackers, we'll have to start buying programs like Norton that essentially act like a grandma trying to comb hair out of your face every second. Regardless, I have always found that Macs operate smoother, and that's where it's at for me.

But let me state that OS X is not UNIX. It's based on the mach kernel but that's like saying something was based on a true story yet it's still fiction.

I'm sure Gil has more experience in these matters as I've let my *nix skills lapse. I used to admin SGI IRIX and BSD systems a bit but am squarely stuck in the Windows world right now. In some ways it's great but in others, not so great.

Regardless, I preferred BeOS over OS X and just wished it had lived to see the light of day. (If you didn't know, BeOS was in line to be what OS X became but was cut off at the last minute by NEXT and Steve Jobs). It worked out better for Apple that way in the long run and Be, Inc ended up being swallowed by Palm.

I once told some Intel engineers that the Pentium IV they were showing me (way before it was released) wasn't impressive since all they were showing me was WinMe **** with wow, count them three videos running simultaneously without any skipping.

I could do 50 videos on BeOS on a P-III at home.

The worst part of that is that Intel had invested in Be, Inc and these guys didn't even know what I was talking about.

Oh, wait. No, the worst part of that was me seeing the finished Steinberg port of a 64 channel (or was it 128 channels? I forget) mixer for BeOS and Be Inc dying about 2 months later. Obviuosly, Steinberg didn't release it.

That is precisely what I meant.

It looks like a true story but underneath when you get down to it, it isn't a true story.

I may have to toy with BeOS (or see if OpenBeOS is up and running). The audio capabilities of that OS were just flat awesome.

Example, I could put in a CD, play two songs from it simultaneously and have one play at half speed while the other played backwards or forwards, if I felt like. Very very audio/video centric.
