After getting gas at lunch today at my local Costco ($2.799/gal- just how does one slice a dollar into thousandths?) I thought I'd stop by and ask the local guy working at the MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS section of the BestBuy in the same shopping center if they had any opinion about Rickenbacker instruments.

He was too busy helping some kids buy some DJ stuff so I never had the opportunity to. Obviously there were no Rics there, but I did get to play around in the demo room with a really ugly Fender Squire bass that felt to me like it was made out of styrofoam. Ick.

I know this much is true.

When I worked for a well-known music retailer before my current job, my store manager found out I played Rics and said, "You know what Rickenbawker (sic) means in German? Firewood."

Wow, now that's just mean!

It's also quite false.

Holz is "wood" auf Deutsch, and Feur is "fire". :D The German language doesn't put the two words together as "firewood" as we do in English however; instead it's "Brennholz". Brenn is German for "burn".

Still, "Brennholz" is a great-sounding brand name for guitars...

It's one of those lovely words where a different pronunciation gives it a different meaning.... if you get my drift.
