You may want to try bypassing the treble pickup cap especially with the SD pickup.

The wiring is how it was done in the 70s. The truss rods are not supposed to come out at the body end. They need to work against the wood of the neck and fretboard. I think the best sound was the SD direct recorded, surprisingly. If you put a wire across the .0047uF cap (smallest orange cap) in line with the bridge pickup, you will get more bass out of the bridge pickup, as Ken posted. Just soldering across the cap makes it easy to reverse.

Yes, this mod is great, it makes the E string actually usable in my case! With the .0047uF cap it sounded dull and weak.
