Well, there's no denying that I am more a collector than a player. With Paul McCartney being my prime influence, I've always been fascinated by the Höfners and Ricks. I have three Höfner "Beatle Basses," all German made (pre-Chinese production), but strangely, I don't have a stock "brown burst" like Paulie's. My first was the deluxe 5000/1 that has a beautiful birdseye back. Then I bought the blue burst on ebay back in '04, then found this one-off super deluxe cherry over birdseye (so fine you can't see it in photos). This is thought to be a top-trim suggestion before the red- and blue-burst trimmed-down production models were made in 2000-02. Don't play these much, but they look great as wall hangers. Once in a great while, I take one out on a gig.

When I realized that my first Ric sounded better than my Fender Jazz and my Stingray I sold them and got two more Rics, including my FL.
That's all I own now and I don't have plans to acquire anything else, 'cept maybe a good 5er someday. Probably the only reason I'd go back to MusicMan at this stage! Bongo 5ers are hot.

I'm all in on the 5-string Bongo, it is my #1 (and #2), and if something were to happen to it, I would be crushed!
But then I would have to play my 5-string Fender Jazz or my doubleneck bass / guitar, but that one is mainly a case queen, although I pull it out when my daughter is here (she thinks it is BOSS).

just_bassics wrote:Besides my three great Rics, I have a handful of other basses not really worth mentioning. But one is, my Guild B302, had it since 1986 and won't part with it. Every bassist that's played it has made me an an offer, but no dice. Currently it is all black, but will be cherry stained mahogany soon, like this B301 from a recent auction.
This guild series is the best neck diver I ever experienced!

I think as long as we're respectful and there's no rick bashing there shouldn't be any problem with rick owners showing their other basses in here. Since last year I have sort of gotten bit by the Musicman Bongo bug and have started to accumulate some limited edition five string models. Some people would say the looks are a hit or miss thing but a lot of people like the playability and other features, like the 18 volt pre-amp w/4 band eq. MM will announce at summer Namm the second series of Dargie Delight's that will have color shifting martini olive paint and ebony fret boards- Boo yay!

Nice body shapes on those Bongos, Mark, It's always good to see a manufacturer stray off the well-beaten path once in awhile (as Rick did in the mid-'50s) and score a solid base hit.

I had a Bongo 5 for awhile. I had really wanted one, but once I had it, I never quite bonded with it. They were designed by someone from BMW. Over at the Earnie Ball bass forum, there was a long thread running showing the development of the Bongo 6. When the instrument was ready, a couple were given to John Myung of Dream Theater. He promptly dropped his Yamaha endorsement.
