Got my first Rick in early '89, an '88 360-12 FG. My girlfriend, now wife didn't know a Rick from a pot, but got the message when we saw McGuinn on the Back from Rio tour. After I gave her some grief about taking binoculars to a rock show, I was on the edge of my balcony seat when I got a poke in the right ribs and she said,"Want to borrow these?" Chagrined, I said "yeah" and was happily watching the show when I got a poke in the left ribs from the guy next to me who wanted to borrow the binoculars as well. They went up and down the aisle the rest of the night. She now likes RM as much as I do.

Oh, yeah, a few years later, a '60's 450-12 MG followed me home from a guitar show. She understood that one, too.

My wife is wonderful with my shenanigans......for both Rics and cars. Plenty of Rics (and cars/bikes) have come and gone during our relationship and all of those transactions have been my decision (unless she has mastered the Jedi mind trick). We are in the midst of a possible house deal that may go smoother if I part with some of my toys. The deal would mean that we are one step closer to my wife having horses of her own (her dream situation). Yet in all of our discussions she says that she doesn't want me to sell anything and that we can wait AND she means it. She loves the LK and also thinks the Mockingbird and Wal are pretty neat. She knows how much I love 'em. She even insists that the GN is off limits.....WHEW!!!!! I am very lucky to have her so I'll decide what gets sold to get us out of the city if things get that far,

I won't go into detail here, but let it suffice to say that when I was married, my wife viewed my one-owner 1969 Bandmaster Reverb amp and my second-owner 1967 Gibson ES-335TDC guitar (the only two musical instruments I owned at that time) as "cash cows" that she preferred me to sell so she could spend that money, too. Fortunately, I managed to keep the Gibson. And not her.

With the wedding coming up in January I think Josh is ok with the Rickenbackers. He's allowed me to turn one of the bedrooms into the new 'studio'. I'm down to 3 Rickenbackers....but I feel extremely lucky to have what I have

Sounds like you made the right choice!

I am a very lucky man in that my wife tolerates my "affliction". Being SHE is the reason for it, buying my first RIC for me as a Christmas present. She saw me FREAK OUT one day in a music store, culling through a magazine announcing all the new guitars for the upcoming 1995 year and I spotted a 4001CS LE picture and clip....I just died. Things were VERY TOUGH during those years, and it was like over a months salary at the time. Not a chance.

I put the magazine down and TRIED to forgot about it. I was playing a Washburn $179.00 special at the time. It did what I needed it to do, but OH that RIC. I've ALWAYS wanted one, since I was 15 BECAUSE of my addiction to all things Chris Squire.

Anyway, needless to say, that Christmas was one for the Record books. My wife walked into a small Mom & Pop shop a few towns over and started to put down a few bucks each month for over a year. I never was able to nail her down to the time factor. I DO know that she ALMOST LOST IT because Janey did tell me that she got a call from the store many months into paying for the guitar...The bass was arriving and THEY didn't have the funds to pay for it to get it off the UPS truck. There was a balance she didn't have but this guy must have said SOMETHING to get her moving. Her Mom kicked in the balance. Janey drove the 100 mile round trip to her Mom's place, got the balance, ran to the store and MET THE UPS guy AS SHE PULLED UP. A few days later, the store was CLOSED.

I WAS limited to 4 total guitars for MANY years. It made sense, I'm far from being deserving for more than one, let alone a quota of 4....but for SOME reason, that number had come and gone. I'm now allowed to do as I like, so long as it doesn't put a pinch on the home front. So, basically, IF I want another RIC, sell one to buy one.

There WAS a point where house money WAS a factor, but the Mrs. found a way to curb my appetite for RICS by threatening to buy some wood of her own........A NEW KITCHEN....UGH! KITCHEN, what a waste of WOOD!

What a great story! Your wife must be a very caring person to do all that for you.

She is. The following year, they did it again and bought me a new rig to go with the CS. The gals said I needed to
have an amp worthy of my new RIC.

I still have 'em both. My mother-in-law passed some 10 years ago, so needless to say the CS is EXTRA SPECIAL to me which is why
I can never, ever see me parting with it. It kind of sums up my life from 15 to almost 50. Funny how much sentiment a RIC can possess.

+1 again...... great story Tony and I know exactly what you are saying about sentiment and Ricks. My mother was so pleased that I was getting back into playing and she was thrilled to bits when I turned up one night with my first Rick.... a Fireglo 330/6.

Sadly it's the only one she ever saw, so that guitar is very special to me.

Tony, your mother-in-law must go down in history as the greatest mother-in-law ever in the world. She must have been a very sweet, special lady. I see where Janey gets it from!

Thanks Joey, she was very special and I miss her a LOT.

Janey's family has always been great as far as my music goes, always an encouraging word or going through great lengths to see the band play years ago.

MY family, lol....not so much.
