I don't know about the modern civic, but with mine, which is twelve years old, I can't fit the hsc in my boot.
This may sound silly, but maybe take the case along on your test drive and see if it fits, that way you can make an informed choice. Is that going too far?
That's what I did. Brought along the case when I was looking at a new Honda element. Fits perfectly behind the front seats on the floor.

I guess NY is not the only place where they say something like that!

If I drive the Dodge Caravan, it just fits straight across the back area, in front of my amp and the wheelie cart for the amp and my bag of junque. If I drive the Mazda Protege, I can fit a Ric guitar, but not the bass, in the trunk unless I fold down the back seat and extend the trunk. The amp has to sit in one of the passenger seats. I might have barely fit the Ric bass in the Mazda trunk once without the seat folded down, but I think I had a hard time getting it back out and just about disconnected the taillights in the process.
Naturally I can only fit my double bass in the Caravan. When I have to get a new car, it will have to be able to carry the double bass. I was hoping a hatch-back Mazda 3 might fit a double bass if the back seat is folded down. I'd have to test drive any potential car out to my house and try to fit the double bass in first before I could consider buying it. Maybe I could just do like The Folksmen in the movie "A Mighty Wind" and strap the double bass to the roof of a little Volvo wagon in a hard case. I'd hate to get bug splatter all over a bass case though. (And I'd hate to buy a hard case for my double bass, since they cost about as much as my bass cost.)

I can't get as many basses by themselves in my Honda Insight as I can a mix of guitars and basses:

Prius
I took 15 Ricks 2600 miles last year. This month I'll take 4 or 5 Ricks 4100 miles.

And with that quiet engine, you'll be able to hear them as you drive along.

Sounds like one of those math word problems!
"If Jdog can carry 15 Ricks 2600 miles, and 5 Ricks 4100 miles, how many Ricks can he carry 3000 miles?"
