Cool! I haven't seen that 330 Capri before (duh!). I wonder why the fretboard has the later style dot pattern as opposed to the 3 dots at the 12th and two dots at the 17th? Thats one of the reasons that I find these old Ricks so fascinating.

Instruments have surfaced from 1957/1958 with both dot patterns. As these early models were basically one-offs hand built by Roger Rossmeisl it isn't surprising to find unusual features on each.

Page 106 of the Smith book shows a 335 with this pattern, and another on the following page with the 3/2 pattern. (I assume most everyone here has the Smith book, which is why I often use it as a common point of reference…)

My early '58 365 wasn't built too long after it. (BTW, the knobs in the pics are not the originals, they came from a 650..)

In light of Jwilli's post I did some digging, and found this guitar. This means I must make a correction. I know of 4 capris with butcher block tops.



I haven't found the neg or slide of this one's indoor shot, or it's documentation. It was another from the Rickenbacker/Hall collection. I'll post about it again when I have all of the information in front of me.

I bought it in maybe 2000 or 2001 from a seller in Texas. Serial number is 2V128 and the only one that I've seen that had checkered binding down side of the fretboard.

This was #37 on my master list of instruments I received from John Hall. My notes say it was found complete, except for the TRC and a strap bolt.

I sold many of these instruments at the Dallas Guitar Show in March of 1989 (which is why there are so many rare and mint condition Ricks in Gruhn's Guide, as his photographer was at this show shooting for the book.)

There were 67 guitars and 42 amps that were considered obsolete inventory, which I cataloged in late 1988, and we sold for John Hall between 1989 and 1992. Yours was the 37th guitar I pulled out of a box or case while cataloging them. I suppose you didn't need that info, but it's a fun bit to the history. (And in response to what you are thinking… Best. Day. Ever.)

Do you have my butcherblock capri on your list? It is clearly fireglo, NOT autumnglo. So could this possibly be the first fireglo produced? SN 2V150. The original owner's family told me he bought it new in the '50s. The owner died, and the family did not know anything about guitars. They told me he played it a few years, then put it under the bed....which explains the exceptional condition of the guitar.
