For years I used an inexpensive Arion compressor. Later, I purchased a DOD Milkbox. The only other experience I've had with compression was the onboard unit on my Gretsch Super Axe. My question is how much better/different is the Janglebox or other boutique effect than the DOD?

Something the JBs have going for them nailing the sound is that they aren't just a compressor, but also a treble boost--like the RM's onboard unit has.With one of them, I can nail the sounds,ranging from the mellower tone of My Back Pages, to the more intense tone of the leads in What's Happening, and do it with a 660-12 as well.

I haven't tried the DOD, so I can't vouch for how good it sounds compared to the others. I do know that I've auditioned four compressors--the MXR Dynacomp, the Boss CS-3 Compressor/Sustainer, the Keeley, and the Janglebox JB2, and I found that the Janglebox was the only one that comes close to the classic Byrds sound. It's remarkably easy to use and very versatile (there's even a separate button for the treble boost, so you can use it for solos).
Someone posted a YouTube link on this thread showing the Farndurk-Burgs compressor in action, and I thought it sounded pretty incredible (although that was with a Tele rather than an electric 12). Someone else mentioned the new Byrdbox that made its debut at the NAMM show. There are so many options when it comes to compressors, and the best thing, if possible, is to try each one out with your guitars and trust your ear. The Farndurk is an Orange Squeezer clone - there are others on the market (Analogman). The Janglebox is noisier than the Keeley, therefore not suitable for my apps. I think a lot of getting the "sound" you want or hear comes from the interaction between your amplifier's settings and compressor settings. My Keeley jangles as good as any of them. You can get a lot of jangle by just using a light gauge pick, too.
