Basically, Fender and Gibson, and some operations smaller than RIC that charge big $$$ for their products (think "Boutique Builders"), are all very eager to "court" artists to rope them into their herd. RIC has really never done that to my knowledge. They just take them as they come, like with Chris Squire.

Sorry if I didn't make myself clear (now I see I wrote a couple of things wrong)... The thing is, you play your Rick cause you like how it sounds and its playbility. Now, you become famous and the fact that you have to send it to a luthier for repairs its bothering you and then a guy from a brand comes here telling you, they'll make you the bass you want, they take care you never have any problems with them and they also give you some money for publicity, that considering they could even make a bass that sounds similar to your Rick...
Rick won't do that, and I believe that's why some artists change brands... not all of course. And that's why you still see people playing them on tv. If you were to become famous for your music and play your Rick, then you'd be one of them... One thing that is amazing about this is, take a bass player who is famous and plays an F or G bass guitar, most of them will have several instruments. Now, most players who play Rick basses have a more limited amount of guitars, some even just one, I would think that speaks great of Ricks in comparison to other brands...
Also there's the question of availability in the market. Say, if you know about Ricks, and you like the way they sound, you'll go look for them, now, in comparison to other brands and models, there are not so many at the stores ready for you to check them out... So many bass players who just like to go to stores and try the thing before they decide on one won't have them in their option list.
Ok, I've extended this a bit too much... Sorry for that.
I hope my point is clear now...
Cheers!

I would say McCartney might be the only artist RIC "courted". It took two tries for the 4001S and I don't ever remember seeing Paul playing the 4004C. Never seen a picture.... Anyone?
