It is a 4008, The rods adjust under the guard but it is not a split guard. It has a bound neck (4003s/8 has no binding) and has stereo wiring. I think the serial checks out at 1981.. Hieronymous's old 4008 had the same specs.

It is possible that the 4003 evolved out of the developments made in the 4008?

Thanks, Eden. My mistake about mentioning the split pickguard. It is interesting, though, that they changed the neck and the position of the truss nuts, so in a way, it shares construction with the 4003. Since the first of the 4003 basses came along in 1980 (or possibly late '79), and this is an '81, we don't know that the fixes to the 4008 led to the new 4003 design. Now, if we could find a '78 or '79 4008 with these features, it might suggest that, indeed. Hmm.
