It's great to hear how some of these iconic tracks were actually done. Thanks for sharing. I would never have guessed that a Rockman was a key part of the Reckoning recording! So the swirly tone that I always thought was a very slow setting on a phaser is more likely to be the Rockman chorus? What was about the great bass tone on Reckoning--any revelations there (other than having Mike Mills doing his thing)? I always loved the way that whole album sounded.

Well, I guess that word from Mitch Easter settles all the dispute in this thread about "Reckoning." We're very lucky to have Mitch on the forum. But there's still a question as to whether Peter's 360/12 was the main guitar on "Fables." I wonder if there's anyone here (short of Joe Boyd) who can shed a little light on that.

I don't remember any effects being used on the bass, but I'm pretty sure we used the studio's Ampeg B-15 with a microphone at some distance. No direct signal. Who knows, maybe we used the Loft analog delay from some slight sweepy stuff. No phasers on the guitars, I'm sure of that. As for Fables details, you might ask Jerry Boys, the engineer. I wrote him (from his web site) with a question about an Argent record and he wrote me back!

Peter didn't have a 360/12. He had a Roger McGuinn model that he used on the Fables tour, and some other live stuff.

I believe you're incorrect about the Rickenbacker 12-string Peter Buck used in the mid-eighties and on "Fables." Check out the Raleigh 1985 live footage on You Tube where Peter plays his Jetglo 360/12 on "Talk About the Passion," "So. Central Rain" and "Good Advices." You can get a clear view of the twelve-string headstock and you can really hear those octave strings chiming out. (It also sounds like Peter is playing through a chorus pedal, most likely the Rockman Mitch mentioned.) I have yet to see any footage of Peter with 370/12 in hand.

As for contacting Jerry Boys, the engineer who recorded "Fables," I've sent him an e-mail from his website but received no response. Too bad, because his memories of what went on in the studio with Joe Boyd could be invaluable.
