The 4002 i had for years didn't have the original pickups in it,but it was set up with coil tap options,as is the new acquisition. I played around a lot with the controls,but basically,yes,the superjazz rear pickup sound was pretty much like what i had with the 4002,and its even more pronounced than the sound i get with my cii's bridge pup. The "neck" pup to me sounds less boomy,especially as i tend to like it in tapped mode best. The 4000 seems to be its own beast,tone-wise, a lot of that must be that old higain. I really like the circle k strings,this is my first experience with them,but it won't be my last!

Is that a Dane custom design pick guard or did they originally come that way ?

Tell us more about that 4002 pick-up "placement" impact on the tone.

Originally,the very first rickenbacker 4000 basses made in the 50's had a similar pg shape.i have always thought it iconic,and fabulous,and wistfully wished the company might do an anniversary special along those lines someday. this was just a rare opportunity to get a bass that pushed a LOT of the right buttons for me.(vintage styling and modern craftsmanship) I'm a big fan of the 4004's,and owned a 4002 for a long time,this bass just covers a lot of my favorite Ric features,i guess. I'm also a fan of Dane's work,and i think this may certainly be my favorite he's done.(along with the 8 stringer). I dunno exactly what else to say about the pickup placement,except i really like it!

I designed the guard using a pattern from an original '57 4000 guard as a start, then tweaking it from there for this application.

That was just a little rundown featuring the bridge pickup,my bandmates asked what i thought the biggest tonal difference from the cii was,so that was mainly it,along with the tapped coil sounds. I played it through my markbass 1-12 combo with the VT pedal on. I played it again tonite with a different,more hard rock trio,and it sounded really great,through a Swr 1-15 combo. I really don't normally go for that bright/midrangy of a tone,but i like the smoothness that rear pup adds when dialed in with the neck pickup.

Wish i had edited the segment a bit more,the first half of that is mostly me talkin' --and i forget sometimes i have a pretty strong southern accent!
