John, to use a higain bobbin you would need the under-coil magnet also and I do not think they would fit in the RIHS shoes and leave room for string clearance. Wouldn't work. Besides the current higains and the current RIHS both sound remarkably close to the same, to my ears. You could use a current higain and unwind it to 8.4k and it would be like an original.FretlessOnly wrote:I wish I had the same luck with a RIHS. I put one on my '72 and I find the output balance from string to string to be very uneven. Plus they are very sensitive to a heavy hand (not in a good way). To each their own, I guess.
But, I'm really hoping to find an older high gain to put in there. Would I be able to use a high gain bobbin and keep the shoe from my RIHS?

Thanks John - yes, clearance was one thing I was worried about. That and hole alignment.
As for souns, the current higains respond nice to a heavy touch, whereas the RIHS sort of "drops out" when the strings are plucked hard.

Can we have everything louder than everything else?

If you want to put a current Hi Gain into a pair of shoes you have to custom make them. It's tricky but it can be worth it..

Or you can file a groove across the handrest with a rectangular file (where the gap would have been) and paint black inside it, to make it look like a horseshoe pickup from two feet. Then you will need a vintage-style surround, and you're done: hi-gain sound with a vintage look.

Don't say it too loud or someone will try it....ilan wrote:Or you can file a groove across the handrest with a rectangular file (where the gap would have been) and paint black inside it, to make it look like a horseshoe pickup from two feet. Tonight I'm going to try the RIHS equipped bass for the first time on stage (thru my GK MB2-500 head the house's ancient 4x10 Trace Elliot cab). At the sound check I switched between all 3 positions of the switch, and they all sounded good. My bandmates liked the RIHS solo'ed best.

I could easily get by with nothing but the solo RIHS on my V63.

Well just came back from the gig. I ended up using just the RIHS with two distinct sounds - pick and fingers. Amp was flat and the vol/tone controls on the bass wide open. I'm very happy.

How does the RIHS sound with overdrive or distortion?
Re: Installed a horseshoe on my '73
There is only one way to find out, really.psychomatthias wrote:How does the RIHS sound with overdrive or distortion?

Thanks for sharing your mod! I have a '73 4001 project that I am strongly considering a RIHS for. Just need to wait until Chris at POTR gets some more in stock!

I had one in my former July '73 4001, sounded great.BobHyde wrote:Thanks for sharing your mod! I have a '73 4001 project that I am strongly considering a RIHS for. Just need to wait until Chris at POTR gets some more in stock!
