is all the wires in the cavity plastic coated ? should be cloth covered. the caps should be tubular blue ones ? the neck pickup should be short pole. the pickguard i think was replaced. under the copper foil, there should be some pencil markings that were taped over before painting a solid color ? horsey looks correct. is it repainted ?

While the strings were off, you should check the earth wire to the bridge.

Um, I would venture that the neck pup is correct. I had a 63 in my shop with long poles, long screws(Some Capris are like this and have additional drill holes in the body) and braided lead, also like most early toasters. I also can make out the circles in the black bars on the top of the pup. Yeah, the controls might have been changed....as well as the wiring...
The cavity is typical early Forstener fun...

I thought the short poles came in around 69/70.

I just talked to my friend, he told me that he didn't change the bass....he found it in that condition. It's interesting to know more about this babe....plus I'm learning more and more from ur comments guys.Although It may have been modified, it is still from the 60's (80/90% ???) and it counts...at least for me. Keep posting guys....cuz the story behind this bass is still unlclear to me...maybe we can solve the mystery around the pieces...

I'll venture that it's a 63 that has been refinished
and re-wired with replaced pots. But can't be sure about the re-fin due
to the unoriginal copper shielding foil. Black(Jetglo) was
available in '63 so who knows...
If the guard is a replacement then whoever did it must have
had the original for a template as the fit of the guard to
the treble surround is how it had been intended....

my '68 had short poles for the toaster. i wonder if there is the pencil marks in the contol cavity under the foil. when i painted my '64 black, i put a piece of tape over the markings to preserve them for viewing.

Looks like you have a really nice bass, and should be worth a decent amount.....don't get in any hurry to sell it!

So, on the early basses, the channel between the neck pup route and the control cavity, that was straight cut not a series of forstner bit cuts? Or did someone "hog out" the channel as well?
