"Quintessential" though?
Bright, clear, ringing tone? I'd say yes.
I'm sure it is, but you're talking about "selling" Rickenbacker to a wide radio audience. Gotta go straight for the jugular. I've never even heard that song before.

You should get out more...

That's actually the reason I chose this song. Give it a listen and if that doesn't change your mind, then we'll just have to agree to disagree.

Okay, these are good suggestions for songs, as well ways to "package" them.
This station bills itself as "alt generational" and they play the gamut from the latest rock to classic and genres spanning rock to country. It does change quite a lot from time segment to time segment, partially reflecting what various age groups might be listening during a particular time of day. For what it's worth, weekday mornings are the most commercial, although "Full English Breakfast" on Sunday, I am told, is the show that has the most worldwide appeal based on their online listening stats. It hits Europe and the Middle East in the 5PM-8PM time slot quite nicely.
What we seem to be missing are young, "modern" bands. I already have some ideas of my own but again, how about some suggestions?
In the end, of course, Jason Feddy will make the final decision and there's nothing conventional about his thinking!

Ric basses:
Ace of Spades by Motörhead
Penny Lane by the Beatles (I'm not sure here)
Roundabout by Yes
that's vesratility!
Ric guitars:
Mr Tambourine Man by The Byrds
Ticket to Ride by the Beatles
Can't explain by The Who (not sure there either)

Anybody mention The Smiths yet?
Granted, hard to know what Marr actually recorded using the Rick, but Reel Around The Fountain, What DIfference Does it Make? and This Charming Man would all be good candidates.
Newer bands though (which somewhat goes against the "quintessential" part of it):
- Franz Ferdinand, Vampire Weekend, or my friend's band Suedehead! (

Yes, you're quite right. Maybe it was my choice of "quintessential" that skewed this. How about "representative of Rickenbacker" instead? Obviously this plays into the approach of presenting by era.

Saw this thread after the one at the Corporate forum (gotta start checking this page first, I guess).
Re-posting my post from there below, in the spirit of discussion:

Hmmm.... with the key word being "quintessential," and thinking in terms of 6- and 12-string Ricks (and not 4-string Ricks), my picks are:
R.E.M. - Radio Free Europe
The Jam - In the City
The Beatles - Help
The Who - I Can't Explain
The Smiths - What Difference Does it Make?
Tom Petty & the HBs - American Girl
(I know, I know - no Byrds, but something had to give - do we really need to hear Turn, Turn, Turn or Mr. T.M. again? [ducks and runs]) To me, these are all band-defining songs which charted relatively well, which are required listening for those interested in these bands, and which contain an extremely Rick-ish sounding riff. The only bad thing is this list perpetuates the idea that the Rick is a one-dimensional instrument. If you have to bend minds a bit, throw in Fugazi's Turnover or Mysterious Ways by U2.

I just thought of a couple more songs. Unless one is a Desert Rose Band fan, they might have slipped by unnoticed by the general public. I don't know.
- One Step Forward
Summer Wind
Will This Be The Day

No Rickenbackers in Help or American Girl.

Both Telecasters I believe (Radio Free Europe is a Tele for sure). Not 100% sure on the basses but they're probably Ricks?

To skew less geezer (which I'm all for despite my selections earlier in this thread) I'd have to say toss some Radiohead in there. But I have no idea which songs have a Rick on 'em.
