That's so true in the chemical sciences, too. I have run across many in my industry that that do not understand that (1) we gain knowledge from our failures, and (2) predictability, even in science, has its limitations.

One of the 'cryptoquote' puzzles I did over the years was a quote from Thomas Edison which went something like this: "You want results? I'll show you results! I'll show you a hundred experiments that did not work."

This is definitely true. I've witnessed (and actually experienced) it many times in the electronic products industry...

I sympathise with Mr Hall and new models. As I gaze lovingly at my 1997 Pearl white, I remember all of the happy comments about this model on this site!

For technical stuff the forum remains the no.1 but for the rest I must admit there is little use in visiting it more than once a month. But then I think forums are rather 20th century anyway

People want -or is it get- just too much these days.
I remember times when car models lasted 8, 9, 10 years, movies had an agreable pace etc...
These days everything has to change faster, be bigger, louder, flashier, like every 5 minutes or so.
And then even, it's still not good enough, or only for the next 5 minutes, or it's already sooo 5 minutes old.
If it's just for the novelty of it, I don't think RIC should invest a lot of time or energy into bringing 'something new'.
Given the fact the guitar buying public, be it musicians or collectors, are on the rather conservative side when it comes to instruments, I totally understand RIC's policy.
Then again, when something new is wanted from RIC, it probably means 'reissue something old'
A 1999 would be nice, I even think it's coming up, once the pickupstuff is settled. AHA - there we go.

And people wonder why A.D.D. is so prevalent these days...

This certainly applies to the Fender/Gibson buying mentality. Everytime you look around there is a new Fender or Squier model, for example.

I think Wim does have a point, you know. Look at how kids consume music... they download mp3s, and after some time, sometimes just a week, they delete it as something else is hot! Music has become as disposable as other consumer articles! In a way this is also reflected in ever changing model line-ups at biggies like Gibson or Fender.

Music HAS become disposable, because it's all been done before, and better.

I know I sound like my father, but....... The Beatles, Stones, and the other British Invasion groups blazed the trail for other guitar-based bands, to the point where there were high-school aged garage bands everywhere, and young boys and girls aspired to be guitar (and bass) heroes. There was memorable music being written and recorded back then that's still viable today - in my opinion, much more so that is being produced by current artists. Classic Rock acts still rule the concert industry; Paul McCartney and the Rolling Stones have much more drawing power than Lady Gaga (lots of unsold tickets on her last tour), Rhianna, Beyoncé, Pitbull, and pretty much any of the DJ-based rap and hip-hop "artists" that are currently ruling the pop music scene. There's no staying power to todays music - again, my opinion.

DJ's don't sell guitars - the music industry sorely needs a great young, guitar-based band, and it sure would be nice if they played Ricks.
