Gotta love how Geddy shreds a massive solo at the end of the song for probably close to a minute while the camera operator focuses in on Alex and then wanders over to Neil.

Don't blame that operator! - blame either the editor, or the operator who maybe screwed up the Geddy shot?

Or, Blame Canada! (link may or may not be what you expect )

I informed him it was unquestionably late 1968 manufactured assembly that has been together since the day it left Rickenbacker. The A or the D string was slightly less powerful than the others. The pole piece, could have used a little more height but it was not long enough to do any noticeable good. Regardless of what has been printed, you can adjust the two inner pole pieces if you are careful. The windings are in close proximity but they do offer a little adjustment room if careful, unlike the two outer.

I suppose Geddy and Scully wanted a bit more uniformity and power to the basses sound. At least she is front and center but hell, I gigged with her before Geddy!! LOL!!

Watching the video again I wonder if there is a RI HS PU in there without the shoes. Depending on how the lighting hits the bass it looks like there are large, shiny pole pieces (magnets?) on the pickup.

I thought I saw silver flashing over the treble pup on my phone while watching it but I was sent a still of the footage and I really can't tell what he has in there!! I know Tom Brantley has wound pups for him before so maybe Tom wound one. Ton hates the way Rickenbacker made the slotted pole pups. He says they are a ***** to rewind. I'll let you all know if Skully (Geddy's bass tech) tells me what he has in the treble spot.

Mystery solved!! I just got off the phone with Geddy's bass tech and that is my former Burgundyglo 1968 4001 that Geddy's playing!! The treble pup, it's a RIHS with the shoes removed. Geddy did not like the shoes on the RIHS because they got in the way. Geddy loves his new 1968 bass, it's one of his favorites and they both like the sound of the RIHS. The original horsie did not have the output, in their opinion.

After the tour the original horsie pup is going back on.

He forgot to mention that removing them saves about a pound in unnecessary weight too!

That bass was like riding a roller coaster, that's for sure!! It broke my heart, a few times and other times it made my day!! Firstly the day she she arrived when I found it wore a RIHS instead of the correct pup, that was a soul crusher. Finding the correct pup with shoes was a great day but pay9ng for them, damn that was expensive!! Putting her all together and having her finally back to the way she was intended was a highlight day!!

She sounded amazing and she played very well. Never intended to sell her. Put her up on eBay to see what interest would be and then I get the pm from Geddy's bass tech, who is a great guy, btw. The highlight was gigging her for a set. I asked my wife to shoot some fotos of me playing her but she ended up taking pictures of me playing my Spector instead. Ugh, women! I don't think i have any fotos of me playing her. The Go Pro footage was too far away and dark to use, that's a bummer.

Yeah, i don't get that he wanted the bass for what it is but that the shoes are in the way. Once the tour is over, she'll return to the way i sold her to him and she'll be officially retired, relegated to an elegant show piece. At least she made it into the tour and is being played regularly and is one of his favorites!!

Skully asked what else I had and when I sent him fotos of my 65 4001, he told me that Geddy wanted her too. That bass is not for sale!! I'm glad too since I suppose he would have pulled off her horsie too! Yes, I said no to Geddy Lee!! Geddy also still has his Mapleglo 4002, according to his bass tech.

Just for the record, I never intended to become a Rickenbacker rescuer but it certainly has turned into that, in a way. I love these old classic basses.

Sepp sent the elecronics to me to rebuild the pots with new internals matched to the original specs and rewire the harness. I think I also replaced the lead wire on the neck pickup.

As Geddy is back to playing RICs in public again, might it be a good time to get a few decent pictures for the second edition of Paul Boyer's book on Rickenbacker basses?
