According to "the book," the changeover was in 2010. But I think I heard that either the color or the clearcoat was changed first, followed sometime later by the other. Don't know if that produced any incompatibility problems.

That's right - a multi step transition. Kind of like 73 4001 features!

Only passing on what I was told. Based on that thread, Rickenbacker should be able to repair the issue quickly. Good deal.

Based on my experience, I'd trust RRF before the average/random dealer. They often have (and spread) misinformation, while over the years, RIC management has been good enough to participate here and share the canon.

FWIW, I posted on the RIC bass forum as well and there's been no response.

I got the information right from Rickenbacker customer support, not a random dealer. Wildwood Guitars is not a 'random dealer'--particularly in this case.
I'm sending one back. If anyone cares, I'll report on how it went.

My statement was not in particular reference to Wildwood. I'll bet they're awesome.

I'm sorry. I'm a bit confused now. Are you saying you spoke with them, showed them your pictures of your basses (which you said earlier didn't have as extensive orange peel as mine) and they have agreed to fix it? Can you post pictures of what your finish issue looks like? I'd like to know what Ric considers a potential defect. Thanks!
