im pretty certain he left around "days" , i think that was 68 ish.

I have been listening to the kinks BBC session recordings lately, all the early stuff - he gets the fattest most solid sound out of his 1999, and he used a pick too.

But, theres photos on the CD sleeve of the band in a crude live recording studio - probably one of the sessions on the CD and he has that Gibson so maybe that explains the sound

On my 12th birthday (1969) I remember my older brother singing "Victoria" for hours and hours......
So I think that song must have come out before '70. I could be wrong though.

The song is from Arthur or The Decline & Fall of The British Empire which was released in 1969.

That horseshoe surround taper is the shortest I,ve seen on a RM1999...They did vary, but that one in the lower pic gives the impression like a late 60,s horseshoe with the square surround, even though this pic must be from 64/65...

Pete left The Kinks on April the 1st of 1969. He did not play bass in 'Victoria', which was recorded and released later. The last album the played in was 'Village Green Preservation Society'. He did play in 'Days' and 'Plastic Man' too. And yes, he had a Gibson and a Danelectro from late 1967 onwards, although he used his Rick in the studio as his main bass guitar. By the way: the photos are great!

It has a shorter pickguard than the later one's as well. Some of the later batches at least had huge guards.
Lefty, every 1964 Fireglo I've seen pictures of has the unmistakeable hand of one painter, don't you think? The pattern is very much like mine.

Mark Arnquist has some interesting info on the early painters, if you get a chance talk to him about it sometime.

Hans Christian Andersen also had some nice fairy tales.

Robert: Thanks for the nice photos of Pete Quaife. These must have been exciting times for him.

Robert: The photos of Pete are fantastic. He has taken a look and he believes the photos where taken in late 1965 or early 1966, somewhere in the North of England, although he is not sure.

"Days" what a great song! I wish i could play way up high like he did, it hurts my back, (I tried again last night, haha!) he has to be the coolest looking bass player of all time.
