So, I've been listening to "I want you (she's so heavy)". It certainly could be the hofner, but it still sounds too solidly in tune to my ears. Especially on the low notes.

I think it's the rick with mutes.

OK. I take back the last post. I went back and listened to "Yer Blues". I'm now thinking it's the jazz.

Whatever... it's great!

So what's different about Eugene, Paul? Do the locals all look the same, have scars on their necks and play the banjo?

Eugene is for my money the single most bizarre small city in the USA. Unless you count Bentonville, Arkansas (home of Wal Mart).

The city itself is libertarian to the extreme, way left on some stuff and way right on other, but definitely so into personal freedoms that it seceded years ago. Home of the University of Oregon and quite radical in puzzling juxtapositions.

On the way into town from the airport, there are endless redneck bars and strip joints, acres of flannel and trucks with rifle racks. Once in town, you are bowled over by Subarus, BMWs and the occasional Merc. Five miles outside and you'd swear you had stumbled onto the set of "Deliverance". The street fairs have guys who will sell you a seeded log so's you can grow your own mushrooms in a dark spare bathroom. (The mushrooms, not the guys). Across the river is its twin city, Springfield, which is a whole different trailer-parkish vibe. And they're 100 miles from anywhere sane, too.

It's different. It ain't a love vibe, either...

Careful what we say about Eugene, we've got Ducks in the audience!

Do they sell axes in Eugene? (poor Pink Floyd reference)

Regarding whether Paul used the Hofner on I Want You, through the 'George video' thread and the 'Paul playing his Rick during Let it Be' thread, I discovered a video of Don't Let Me Down at fastfocus.tv that shows Paul rocking his Hofner way up the neck. Of course the sound is from the released recording, but... he did play way up there!

John Ashfield: The CD arrived today - quick delivery by CD Baby. It's great!

There's a band here in Oz called 'Mental as Anything'. One of the singers is 'Greedy' Smith - you sound remarkably like him (or maybe that should be the other way round!).

I particularly like The Watermelon Song (favourite #2), Go Slow (favourite #1), Come Along, The Best Part, You Are Everything To Me, and Sleep Tight.

I'm going to use some of the tracks to practice my bass playing!!

John Ashfield and band were superb at IPO. I haven't heard a live Ric bass in centuries, and John's sounded like it was in 3-D compared to other basses. John's style is very fluid, nice walks (dare I say - quite Macca-ish), and he wasn't thrown at a slight mishap (I'll let him tell). John and his band were excellent, and I'm enjoying his new CD as well. Good show, John, and nice meeting you.

I broke my "A" string at the end of the 2nd song! It kind of hampered my attempts at melodic bass stylings. But it all turned out ok!

I am at the beach right now, so I'll post more about it later.
