Don't mean to hijack this thread, but since it has veered off to neck profiles and such....I seem to remember a quote from JH earlier this year....he said something to the effect that the newer truss rod system had nothing to do with the bigger necks of today....and I believe that Jeff Rath(correct me if I'm wrong)asked him if he would consider making the current necks smaller and more playable, and I think JH said something like "I'll consider it" or something to that effect.....
Doesn't the c64 bass have the slimmer neck? Why couldn't they do that to the basic 4003?....
It's funny, the bass I use the most is also my most beat looking bass, it's a 96 jetglo, but plays and sounds great. I bought it for a beater to bring to Lima for a little over 500 hundred bucks and was amazed when I played it at how good it sounded ands played, you never know.
Got to say, I prefer beat up basses, not really because of some vintage snobbery, but because I'm much happier taking them out live. I feel really uncomfortable using my V63 (mint) for gigs and even rehearsals, as I'm just waiting for that 1st ding to appear and I can't relax with it. Most of the stages we play on are quite small and our singer jumps about like a loon (once broke his nose with my bass when we both hurled ourselves into the air at the same time...). My 72 4001, 73 4000 and CS though I'm not bothered about at all; I'll take them anywhere.
BTW Anndra, that 4001 of yours sounds VERY interesting; sounds like the neck and weight may be similar to my 72 ("flat" neck profile and light weight). I'm actually quite keen to get a jetglo (w/crushed pearl)from that period some time in the future.
