4005 Project

We're all pulling for you Ted! This is quite an interesting project....very unusual....is there a light at the end of the tunnel ???

It is a very long tunnel. When it comes to 4001/3's I have lots of them to use for reference. The 4005 is a totally different instrument though and is largely alien to me. Very soon I will be asking for help from the 4005 owners here. I will need pictures and measurements so I can verify that this bass was not altered apart from the fingerboard. There is evidence that the neck had been removed from the body and it may not have been reinserted correctly.

My serial # is GB, Feb '67. We may be pretty close on the mfg. date so things are probably pretty similar and we can compare...just let me know when you're ready...

some where I have a mess of detail jpegs of my '65 4005 I shot for another 4005 project someone here was doing , email me if you need any help & I'll dig them out or just shoot you some new ones,

The truss rod is out - finally! The wood is very fragile in this neck and I could not power tools. The work to carve out the packing over the truss rod was done with a small chisel and hand pressure only. The next step is to fill the truss rod channel with walnut. BTW - the serial number on this one has 4 digits and they are not even close the ones mentioned above.

Maybe an interesting experiment would be to inlay graphite bars to add strenght and perhaps minimize any dead spots.

I get the strength part; but don't understand 'minimize any dead spots"?

Also, would graphite bars change the abilities of the truss rods?
