It's gone now for about $1800.00 and I had wondered about the finish too as it is a little darker than my 78 4001 Azureglo but they darken with time, I remember them when they were new and they were a lot lighter. That's why I thought mine was a midnight blue when I bought it and was told so by GC. If you make the pictures larger you can see a lot of little dents in the surface on the front of it, I am sure that that was the original finish. I don't feel like taking the pick guard off of mine but I believe mine was taped somewhat similarly to that one in the cavity also.

I can't believe he ended the auction early to sell at less than the B.I.N.; I'd have held out to see what happened. If I'd have known he'd have done that I may have offered him the cash myself (I'd have found it from somewhere; was trying to sort something out as it stood). Not quite sure whether to breathe a sigh of relief or cry into my milk, but at least I don't have to worry about it anymore. Bummer though...
BTW Bob, I was pretty sure about the marks in the finish too. Oh well, there goes if not my perfect ten, then my near perfect nine and a half....(the ten would be a 72 4001 in azure with FWOP etc....)

That's why I usually throw an early bid in and if I am very interested in it I'll usually send the seller an email to let them know that if they are considering ending the auction early to contact me also. I've put in bids for stuff where the seller ended the auction early for someone who emailed an offer for less than my max bid....so it pays to let your intentions be known. Sorry you lost out.

Missed it! Why on earth did he end it THAT early? My finger was hovering pretty close to the BIN key.Still, saved me from myself I guess.

Someone from Germany was the buyer...maybe he managed to get a look at it. I would have driven a couple of hours to find out if it was original. To sell for the opening bid...ouch...I had the guy,s personal e-mail address and should have wheeled and dealed behind the scene. My G.A.S. isn,t that bad at present I guess....
Someone either got a real cool piece at a good price, or an expensive re-fin...
