I've had XM radio for over two years and love it, Channel 74, Bluesville, Blues from the 20's to present day. Bill Wax who runs the Blues station is a neat guy and will play requests, and reply to email.

There's a lot of really great music of all types getting a chance to be aired that would have otherwise gone unnoticed.

"the stuff that bores me is old 60's flatwound Beatles music ..."

Hrrm. . .

If I had to choose between Macca's tone on Rain and Paperback writer, on the one hand, and the Exit Stage Left tone, on the other, I'd go with the Beatles every time. That liquid, funky, booming sound is wonderful Image

But I love and adore both sounds and bands.

Chris, you're not quite the "geezer" I am (43) Image

I too have a special place for Rush and Yes...and the Beatles ......a coincidence? Nah...the RIC sound is so unique....

No problem Jeff, the puns are all part of the fun here on the forum....

actually I do like some of the beatles stuff ... I just like Geddy, Chris Squire, John Entwhistle stuff better ... I like round wound strings with fret buzz and distortion on a Ric ... if you want the beatles sound play a hofner ...

Ok guys, how about R.E.M.? Mainly old R.E.M.. The all Rickenbacker years. Mike Mills with his 4001 and Peter Buck with any of his 330'S or 360'S. You know Reckoning, Fables of the Reconstruction. Before Mike Mills went flat with a Fender. It wouldn't have been so bad if he switched to a Jazz. Oh well, now he sounds like everyone else. Flat and empty.

I'm a roundwound guy also. Distorted, grinding tone. If you clean it up, nice and twangy thru a Rick.

That's funny, Chris Squire and The Ox are my fave bass players. And in my original band my CS thru Ampeg is quite grindy. And it has Roto rounds.

I agree Mike Mills has wonderful tone on the IRS albums.

I popped in Life's Rich Pageant the other day and mentally compared it to the most recent album. I can't say I'd have bothered with the new one if it hadn;t been out of dull loyalty.

I truly wish there were more all Ricky bands. Beautiful ringing guitars and deep grinding bass. Something like that doesn't come around too often. Too few, too far between.

Ronn, you gotta get your lead guitarist a 650 or something!

Regarding Mike Mills, I've seen pictures of him with Rickenbackers in the early 80s, but I've never seen it substantiated how much he actually used them on recordings, and which recordings they were. But his playing we definitely more spirited and inventive in the old days, that's for sure!

I have a couple of old Musician mag's from 83-84-85. His main bass (on all albums up till Lifes Rich Pagent) was a 4001 Rick until 1986, then he started playing fender. That's what's great about keeping old mag's for years. Great for old trivia.
