Peter: I suppose that could be the case. It's really amazing. I'm not sure if it's the weight or the pickup or a combination (what the hell kind of pickup is that? It's a monster) The sustain is ridiculous. You hit any note, fretted or open, and it just keeps ringing. At the end of songs I've always got to slowly dampen the string(s) at the bridge with the edge of my palm because it's still ringing long after everyone else's instuments have faded out. You'd think that with the bolt-on neck that the sustain/tone wouldn't be as long/thick as the 4004. I will say that the 4004's tone has a lot more going on in the way of overtones and such. The 3001 is just a great straight ahead rock bass, lot's of fundemental, deep bottom and that Rick growl on top.

Oh, and one more thing, it's REALLY LOUD. I've got to back the volume off a couple numbers when I switch from the 4004 to the 3001. I'm stunned that these basses aren't more popular.

That p/u in there is crazy isn't it? I think that the heft of those basses add to the tone. My bandmates call it the coffee table bass!

I'm tellin' you, this has got to be the most under-rated basses of all time. I currently own four basses, and if I had to choose only one to keep, it would probably be the 3001 (the 4004 is a very close second, but the visceral high I get from playing the 3001 puts it over the top).

Donald....shhhhh...let's just keep this little secret beween us. Nothing here to see folks. Now move along. Plenty of 4000 series basses to go around.
