Pretty cool, but you'd think he'd try to hide the plugs he put in the tuner holes when he moved and re-drilled them.

I think at the minimum he should have used the same type of wood to fill the holes. But it looks awesome from 5 feet away!

...yeah I don't want one of my 4004/5Cii basses to look like that if I convert it into a 4004/10Cii.

It would work a lot better to do that 4 to 8 conversion on a jet glo ... then refinish the headstock after filling and redrilling ... then no one could tell it was modified ... it would look like a factory job ...

...unfortunatley I didn't realize RIC had begun to offer the Cii basses in all the standard colors. I think they were at only offered in mapleglo and trans red, blue and green when the Cii5 was first introduced. So I picked trans red because I think it goes best with the gold hardware...or I would have ordered a jetglo.

Jeff Rath needs to check out that 4004-8. That would give him something to review when he gets around to doing one himself. I think Jeff would do a cleaner job.

Notice the uneven spacing and downward slant to the tutuners. This is not optimal and inparts uneven tension on the headstock. This is why RIC had the "frogfoot" headstock so that the tuners would be in more or less a sraight line. I've designed a 4000 series headstock that utilizes the frogfoot idea to line up the tuners. I posted a scan of it some time back. I'll bet Jeff Rath saved it.

Funny thing is I live right near Santa Ana and I'm buying all of my new stuff back east. The used market isn't that great here either.

Hello! I hope I've got this right?! I'm posting here for the first time..My name is Simon Mole, I'm a big fan of all things Rickenbacker (OK - basses in azureglo and 4005s in any colour you like especially!!)And was told my Frankenstein's monster of a 4004 8 string had made it here! I just thought you'd be reassured to know it was a fairly badly treated bass BEFORE I put it to the sword (I would never touch a good 'un!), and you're seeing it a bit "work in progress" - it will be a striking blue soon as the weather picks up for spraying in my garage (something approaching azureglo? well, its on the cards...), so I didn't worry too much about matching the wood types up top. It looked like 8 string potential since there's the wide neck and big headstock (machines were arranged by moving them around on a card template until I was sure they'd all turn!!)...Hope that's of interest!! At the end of the day it was a bit of a redundant bass (kind of slipped down the cracks between those regularly played), but now its front of the rack and (I think!) sounds great. And loud. My bands hate it.... I'd like to add I was amazed upon coming across this site what knowledgable and enthusiastic people post here - I've learned a hell of a lot already and its great to see the Rickenbacker sickness is so well catered for!

Welcome Simon....your fame and collection has preceded you....you wil find much to do with the Rick here....A lot of nuts too ( I resemble that remark having owned 68 and soon to be 70 Ricks)
