Dale, I have one bass that has the finish removed from the fingerboard and it is also giving a different sound. I much prefer the finish being taken off (although I am not going to take the finish from the other 6 basses' fingerboards just the same...)

My 4003FL does have a finished fingerboard, this one was made in June '04. I have scatterwound toasters in both positions, works great for a fretless.

Ted, you asked an interesting question of Dale. And Dale, you answered some completely different question, or maybe I didn't understand Ted's question.

Here's how *I* understood Ted's question... Dale, how would a 4003S made in 1984 have a 3-piece neck? Any insight?

Just wondering, since it'll be in my hands on Feb. 17.

Also, with all this talk of humidity... Will I have any serious issues with this East Coast bass in the summer when Salt Lake City dries out?

I'm not sure as to why, I didn't work there then.
I mean it's simple to substitute a maple stringer inplace of walnut or shedua. Maple being stronger than walnut would add more strength and stability
to the neck so maybe this was a test run. Has John
Hall had any reply to this?
