I've seen a concert taped in '69 at Big Sur and Young, Crosby and Stills are all playing Gretsches on a firey version of "Down By The River".

Thanks Jerry it may have been some Gretsch guitars on those other songs too. Some times our minds can play visual tricks on us as well by associating some sounds with pics in our minds. Kinda like imagining how some one looks when you just have heard their voice but have not actually seen them.

Stills and Young both were iconized playing Gretsch White Falcons during that period. Young probably plays his black Les Paul more now. Stills has at various times played all sorts of other guitars, but I've never seen him play RICs or Fenders.

Crosby played a Gretsch Tenny originally (in the Byrds that was originally targeted at Gene, but Crosby decided that he played better than Gene did, so inherited the guitar, leaving Gene to play tambourine).

After joining Stills, Crosby played the aforementioned "Frankenstein" guitar and then more often then not, would play a 335-12 string when CSN played live.

I think if you look closely at the Big Sur footage it is the "Frankenstein" guitar shown at the very beginning of this (very old) thread.

Steven Stills often played a Fender Telecaster. I recall seeing him with Tele's on a number of occasions. I believe I've read somewhere that he owns(ed?) a 370/12 RM as well.
