I remember when Ted's 1963 4001 was listed on Ebay, I remember the Las Vegas connection to the listing (correct me if I'm wrong)...what a great bass.

The only thing that would lead me to believe the pickguard on that bass was a replacement is that is does look slightly translucent(you can see the channel routs in the body underneath in the pic--at least it 'looks' sort of like you can)...most(but not ALL) factory white pickguard stock I've seen is of a consistancy that can't be seen through, even on 1963 production. STILL an awesome piece. Congrats.

Ted,....buddy,...."collection" is putting it lightly. I'm stunned, you have some very fine pieces there, I think thats the only 4002 I've ever seen that wasn't mapleglo. Oh yea, by the way welcome to the forum.

John: I bought my 63' from Gary Dick at Garys Classic Guitars back in August. He says he bought it from someone at a show in Las Vegas. Maybe there was an eBay connection there somewhere. I don't know.

Scott: Thanks! my collection gives me a lot of pleasure. I keep them near my desk so I can play them when I need a diversion. They all get played several times per week.

Rickaddict: The gold cover is probably for my latest project bass. I bought that 70's project 4001 that was on eBay a few weeks ago. Not the one with the shattered neck but the one that is missing a fingerboard. My plan is to give it a nice birdseye fingerboard with black dot fret markers and binding. Refinish it in white and have a clear pickguard made with gold back-painting done to match the cover. That is the plan for now anyway.

Ted, I remember Gary having your bass on his website, yes. The Ebay 'Las Vegas' 4001 was maybe almost two years ago if I am recalling correctly. One thing I do remember is that the Ebay bass went for $3750. I doubt if that'll ever happen again, lol...I had thought at the time it may have been the very same bass that Rickenbacker sales rep Harold Buckner was holding in the trade show photo in the Smith book.

There was also one listed on Ebay that was in the NYC area (maybe the Sam Ash guys) that was run up to $7500 or so and the auction was pulled w/o a resolution...

Yes, I have wondered about the picture of the FG 63' in the Rick book. Could it be the same one? Hard to tell. Neither has a finger rest which seems to be fairly standard from that era and there were only 29 (says Smith) FG's made that year. John Hall says that Smith only had records for one of the operating companies that comprised "Rickenbacker" so his production numbers may be low.

Well Ted, if your plan doesn't pan out I live in Chi Town also and I'd be glad to take that TRC off your hands. Oddly enough, I was considering it for my white Rick.

I don,t know if it,s my eyes at 6am this morning or the angle that the bass is being held by Mr Buckner, but does it look like the toaster is situated slightly off towards the treble side to anyone else...

I have the auction and pictures saved somehere, I'll try and post them this weekend. I remember the auction well, I was gassing hard for the bass but didn't have any cash available. Good score Ted.

Dedgoat, I tried to email you lastnight through eBay but the mail was returned for some reason. Your current high bidder has a habit of running up bids then retracting at the last minute. He has done it 3 times in the last few months.

I'm having some server issues with cox at the moment, thanks for the heads up I'll look into it.

Here's my newest and only bass. It's a 1991 and it's still pretty filthy in the picture. I've presently got it torn apart and am cleaning and adjusting. I know it's nothing fancy compared to some of the others in this thread, but it's mine.

Jeff, what are you talking about????? Thats a beautiful 4003-S you got there. I love the "S" series and would love to have one. I wish Rickenbacker would bring them back. Post more pics when you get her back together.
