Ritchie Blackmore was replaced by Tommy Bolin when Blackmore left Deep Purple to form Rainbow in 1975. Ian Gillan had left two years previously, so the Deep Purple line-up that remained wasn’t one of the best. Blackmore’s last contribution until rejoining in 1984 was on the Stormbringer album, from the fall of 1974.

A Wembley Stadium concert was put on by Elton John, The Eagles and The Beach Boys in 1975. A string of hits heard that year included “Philadelphia Freedom,” “Someone Saved My Life Tonight,” “Island Girl,” “One of These Nights,” “Lyin’ Eyes” and “Take It to the Limit,” as well as the recent number 1 songs, “Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds” and “Best of My Love.” The Beach Boys would hit the top 5 a year later with “Rock and Roll Music.”

Steely Dan split up this week in 1981, several months after releasing their Gaucho album. They didn’t reform until 1994, when a series of U.S. concert dates were recorded and then released as a live album the following year. Unfortunately for Steely Dan followers, several attempts at remastering their albums have resulted in nothing but frustration for fans. One of the problems involved the omission of the beginning of “Rikki Don’t Lose That Number” from the Pretzel Logic album, originally released in 1974.

The Beach Boys released their last studio album of new material in 1992. Brian Wilson was no longer around, which left Mike Love running the show. The songs were once again about surfin’ and the summer, with a few cover versions like “Hot Fun in the Summertime,” “Remember (Walking in the Sand)” and “Under the Boardwalk” thrown in for good measure. Summer in Paradise was not well received, partially because it was overshadowed by a Beach Boys box set released the following week.

Radio Caroline was launched in 1964 I think, I know it was just before I left for Canada in 1965 at least.

Story: One night I was riding my bike home from work and stopped at a red light. A big black Cadillac with tinted windows pulled up next to me. The passenger window was rolled down just a tiny bit, and a Chuck Berry song was coming out. I started to tap my foot and because I was on my road bike and wearing cleated shoes, the sound of steel on concrete was fairly loud. The light turned green and I swear the person inside gave me a little wave (hard to tell because of the tint) and then took off. I then noticed the license plates on the caddy said CROOKS, which was the name of a bar downtown that Akroyd owned and would frequent when in Toronto.

This not a rock and roll story but I was outside Buckingham Palace a few years ago with my wife when all of a sudden the gates opened up and a burgundy Rolls Royce shot past us. There was an arm of a female person wearing a formal length glove behind a deeply tinted window, making a mechanical waving movement. I told my wife it was the Queen and she was chuffed............but deep in my heart I know it was really just a mechanical hand, put there to wave at the masses.................. I suspect that the age of automation has reached Buckingham Palace.

There may be a similarity in our stories but who's to say?

Ah Brian, at least it was a royal mechanical hand. They are manufactured at the old Rolls Royce factory alongside the special order royal limousines. Was there an animatronic corgi as well?
