I've just recently aquired a 1978 Ampeg V-2 Guitar head. It actually sounds good for bass, also. The back panel says 60 watts, but it sounds a little more powerfull than that. I sometimes switch to my Fender BXR 200 head if I want a solid state sound, or if I just want to save the Ampeg's tube filaments from rattling too much. As I stated in my last post here, I still have my Peavey 2x10 with Carvin speakers.

I've ditched my Mesa Boogie 400+ in favor of an Ashdown ABM500. Still using my two Eden 410XLT's. Although the Ashdown sounds great and has tons of power, I'll admit it sounds better with my P and J basses than my Rick... My preference for a Rick would still be a cranked 70's SVT and 8x10.

I use a Mesa Bass 400+ and two EV-loaded Mesa 1x15 cabs.

Gear Update Time:

I've acquired a piece or two lately (and farted a lot, too!), the result being:

1. No Friends anymore!

2. A rartty-looking, but cool-sonding Ampeg V-4B head which can run thru my eBay special Eden 410XLT bottom,

OR

3. That Eden can set under my 1990 SWR Redhead + Behringer Ultrafex. Truthfully, the SWR gets a better sound with my "Instant 4001S" running just thru the Edens! The Redhead's on-board speakers sound too clean!

Someone help me suss that out…

Gear Update # 3:

Tomorrow I pick up a rare beast: a Selmer Treble-n-Bass Fifty Mk. II head, built 1967, which I am told, is quite similar, under the hood, to a JTM-45 in circuitry.

Cabinet recommendations most welcome.

I use a 1973 Ampeg V-4 guitar head through an SVT cab. The head is rated at 100 watts, but I always have plenty of headroom. I used to have an SVT head that I ran my 4001 into, stereo (neck pu into channel one , bridge pu into channel 2). Not true stereo, but the instrument seemed to come alive when blended like that.

Ampeg ... ampeg and ampeg ... yes I have 3 ampeg heads b2 and b3 .... I play through a variety of cabinets ... I have several 15" cabs and my favorite is a 1x18" with a 2x10" setup ... I build my own cabs and use carvin or eminence speakers ...

I've used Gallien Krueger amps since 1980. I currently run a 400RB through Electra Voice speakers. Crisp and clean and no caffene!

Ashdown ABM 500 with 410 Ashdown Cab and 210 Amspeg Cab. Very nice sounding rig with plenty of headroom for the 3001 bass. The 4005 could use some more power due to the lower output of the bass. (I had the same problem with my SVT classic)
I switched from an Ampeg SVT Classic.
This also sounded nice ofcourse but it broke down on me once and I was tired of lugging it around. As a comparison the SVT sounded a bit warmer. The SVT also sounded more 'all over the place'
The ABM has more focus and is still very deep.

A conservatively sized & rated (60 W), US made Roland Super-Cube 60. This tiny beast knocks spots off many of the bigger name amplifiers soundwise. Unlike many amps I've tried through the years, my trusty Roland allows a Rickenbacker bass to sound like a Rickenbacker bass, period.

Ampegs, Two SVT's and cabs, one head is a mid 70's the other is an 87 reissue, the cabs are early 70's 8X10's. Also for small gigs, two B-15T's, these are solid state 100WRMS updates of their old B-15N's, the old 30 watt tube B-15N's sound better. Occasionally I will use an SVT head with the B-15 cabs. Normally in a mid size room I'll use one SVT head and SVT cab, big rooms I'll use one head and two cabs, Rics thunder through these things, I'm 50 and still lug them around because of THE sound.

Trace Elliot AH500 w/ 2 410 cabs, V type preamp, QSC 850 with a trace 412 cab. I had even tried using a Peavey duel 212 for a tube overdrive tone, it worked pretty well but the amp weighs a million lbs.

I use any combination of the following:

Walter Woods 650 watt 2 channel amp.
Ampeg PB250 amp.
Mesa/Boogie Studio Caliper amp.

Custom made 1-10 cabinet with EV 10BX.
Mesa/Boogie Diesel 1-15 cabinet with EVM15L.
'68 2-15 Sunn cabinet with Eminence Delta 15s.

My basses include a '73 4001, two Zon 5/1s (fretted and fretless), Rick Turner Renaissance RB5-FL, Fender AV '62 Jazz Bass and soon (8-10 months I've been told, ha ha, but probably more like a year and a half, I should have a 4004Cii).

I play through an Ampeg B100R combo. The old time tone of the 4003 through this amp is wonderful to behold. This is another great combination of amp and bass IMO.

Right now, I use a Hartke 3500 head and a 2*10 Transporter cab.

Someday when I have extra cash, I'll get a 4.5 XL cab.
