Paul, the toaster looks closer to the neck then it would be for a 78.

Bob, thank you for pointing it out.
Could it be that the bass was made earlier than 1978?

Talk about mayhem!
Bob and Paul, of course this 4001 is pre-1978. The seller states that he bought it in 1978, not that it was made in 1978. I say it's from circa 1973.
I sure would like to buy it to restore it to its former glory. Then it would be a keeper.

Seller states: "Almost all original parts". That sure is grossly understating the modifications made to this particular 4001!

You know I should start a shelter or rehab house for abused Rics ...
I could buy up all of these hatchet jobs and restore them so they look and play like a Rickenbacker again ...
Or maybe I sould buy these poor unfortunate instruments off of ebay fix and restore them and resell them ....
The problem is ... is there a profit in this ... I've done this for a few Rics but I usually break even ... not including my labor ...
I know I sohould get a government grant for historical restoration or something ...

Jeff,
keep up the good work.
It's good karma.
May those who do good deeds be rewarded heaven.
I wish you all the best.
"The RIC Rehab House" sounds cool.

A rehabilitation facility for abused Ricks? I like that. Provided it includes a dungeon for perpetrators... Only kidding there. Yes, it is a good idea, Jeff, and I think a profit could be made, however small.

A dungeon for perpetrators?
Yeah why not? Make a torture machine out of the unlawful bridges and pickups....
People will start calling us "The RIC Lynch Mob Boys" then, hah.

Check out this 4001 basket case on ebay...
Why would someone do this to a vintage bass like that.... Urghh....

Poor 4001. Yeah, it is begging to be restored. We're talking major surgery here. Grab it, anyone. I'll contribute the pickups. For free. And hey, get the RIC firing squad - modifying thusly a 4001 is as much as I can take.
