Yes. I ran the bid up. I'm guilty. That's what I do!
I'm not a fan of broadcasting my max bid for everyone to see. I prefer to keep my bid to myself until the end. It is true that if you had told everyone your max bid was $3500.00, I wouldn't have bothered bidding. But still, I don't think it would have been a wise move. If you had posted here that your max bid was $3500.00, what would stop the seller from calling up a friend and asking him to bid $3400.00? Or what's to stop your friend the Emperor from beating up your wallet just for fun by bidding $3400.00?
Its a beautiful bass Ken, congrats again.
By the way...Something occurred to me yesterday: Aren't you the very same person who posted a couple weeks ago that you never liked the skunk stripe? Shame on you snatchin' it out of the hands of a guy like me that absolutely LOVES the skunk stripe!!

Well my view on the skunk thang down the middle is, i guess at the time it probably was pretty cool because the standard walnut wings were probably getting old,but now most of us prefer the walnut wings over the skunk.

I like both the wings and the stripe. No offense to those who have mapleglo 4003s(I have one too!) but without either a walnut skunk stripe or wings the 4003 looks a little less interesting to me.
I have a feeling the skunk stripe on your '72 is gonna grow on you, Ken. If not, keep me in mind!

Ha ! I had a snipe set to go at a price that would have probably taken it too. When I realised that others on the forum were in it, I deleted the bid. I'm not in the business of stealing guitars from under the noses of other forum users. I want a checkerboard 4001, but there will be others.
Just a note to say that it's a good idea to post your interest in these auctions here, just so that we don't bid each other up at the very least.

So...I'm a bad guy for wanting something that another forum member also wanted?

Nope, not at all. But I didn't want to leave a snipe in place that could have cost Ken a bunch of cash by pushing up the price on a bass that I wasn't that committed to having right then. He got it for less than my bid would have pushed it to.
Now, if I see the bass that I feel that I've just got to have, I'll make it known that I'm interested in it and if anyone wants it more, they're just going to have to bid for it.

Gareth, soon you will know that none of us can resist the lure of the checkered binding. One of these days you're gonna have to come up against one of us!

Jim Glen ,i have a finger rest for your bass there. Its very touchy when a bass comes up we want,i ran into this a couple of months ago with a certain white 8 string Jared had a bid in and i didn't want to snipe or inadvertently run up the bid [after all Ive never even played one]so i left it alone and told everyone else to leave it alone. In general we try not to do it because it can also happen to you. I'm with Gareth on this one, we should post are intentions among ourselves, hey were all here to enjoy and help each other, right!theres enough basses for us all[except for doublenecks ,DAVE lol]anyway with a little help from your friends here you should be able to find anything you want.

I have no issues with someone bidding against me.....if someone is willing to pay more than me than they deserve it more. No biggie.
There was an instance where I was bidding on a semi-rare Ric on Ebay and it was known on this forum and a fellow Forumite emailed the seller and bought it outside of the auction......I was and still am a little bothered by that. I feel the seller is more to blame but I still think it was rude of the buyer to not just bid and let the auction run it's course. All is fair I guess.....but I would never do it.
The only problem with revealing your max bid on the forum is that there are plenty of fringe members and lurkers who could use it against you.....either to outbid you by $1 or to shill bid an auction for every penny. If I'm bidding on something a few of us want I have no problem discussing it off-forum to save us from ourselves money wise but I won't post it in the open or to someone who isn't a "regular".

Ken,
She now has a finger rest courtesy of Pickgaurdian.
I lost this one originally to hesitation. Bob Scott snagged it at the BIN, and I ended up getting it from Bob in a private sale.
After Bob won the auction I emailed him begging him to sell me the 72, and naming a price I was willing to pay for it. When he decided he just had to have a C64s he contacted me and deal was done.
Bob had a Pickgaurdian rest installed, it already had the holes in the guard and body.
We all have our passions, mine is Fireglo, had I seen the 72 Fireglo fretless from a couple of weeks back, I'd have been all over it, and would have been happy to share my intent with my fellow forum members.
