By the way Dave, those are some fine Ricks you've got there, but I'm just stating the obvious here. All you need is a 4-2-5 & a 4002 to really fill 'em out.

If I don't get this one a new 4003 will be mine very soon. Shortly afterwards to become a 4-2-5.

Why not just get a 4003/5 to start with? While the 4-2-5's that Jeff has done all look great and are well done, the one feature that just doesn't look right is the three tuners on the bottom that are so close that they have to be canted outwards to clear each other. Just once I'd like to see someone do this right by filling a hole or two, redrilling and then refinishing the headstock. Incidently, the holes being drilled for the Schaller M4's should be slightly smaller than the ones that are already there as they are metric. Also, the hole should be stepped so that it is a larger diameter from the front than from the back. This makes the tuner more stable and the guitar easire to keep in tune.

If Jeff was a re-finisher, I'm sure he would do it this way. Since he cannot even approach the quality of the Ric finish, he stays away from that. I prefer it that way also, but it doesn't work with a standard 4003 headstock, as we have proven many times.

Having the facility's to do a quality re-fin is key,I refined my 72 mapleglo at home but that was just lacquer no color and it wasn't hard just a lot of work,If I had a spray gun and a booth I could probably come pretty close to a factory finish,It does take man hours...

I'm not a refinisher either so I pay to have it done. I think the 4003 headstock is plenty big enough. The spacing and redrilling needs to be done without compromise for a more factory and as well as asthetic look.

The 4080's sound great. The guitar half sounds like a 480, and the top like a 4001. The only difference is the fifth knob and the globs of extra maple really give it a lot of warmth and bottom end.

The 4002 is the one piece that I just never ever saw for sale. But your right, I need one for sure.
If I get a couple, then I'll give one to Mr. Jeff for the 4 2 5 treatment

Pardon the newbie question, but both of the necks look like bolt-on to me. wouldn't this substantially alter the sound of the bass guitar half at least? compared to a standard neck-through Rick bass anyway?

4080 necks are glued in. The bolt on feature is just an added stability feature.

At least thats what I've heard, I've never seen one of these animals up close.

Also- they aren't making 5 strings any more & Mr.Rath says the extra string gives the bass better resonance than stock 5 strings.

The 4080's have glued in pocket necks that have four screws and a neck plate for added strength. Having a bolt on neck does not substantially alter the sound and the fifth string gives the bass better resonance than a stock 4-string.
