I use a 1/2 ton small arbor press, have had it for years. It works great, before that I used a drill press and it also worked very nice. At Electro in the early 70's we used a hammer. Mine was a small ballpeen type, while Dick Burke used a regular claw hammer to set the frets. I still have my hammer, I know Dick has retired his years ago.

Here's a picture of Alan's bass (color disguised!) as it was last evening as I turned out the lights on my spray booth.

Granted, not too exciting in b & w...

The clearcoat/cv was sprayed with a gun that I've not used a whole lot since I bought it in 2001--one of my purple Binks MG-1s. For the heck of it, I fitted it with a new 3M disposable cup system. Now it's my dedicated clearcoat/cv gun, and the old SATA has been retired. Although it's the same age as the Binks, it's had about 500 hours of use and is ready for a rebuild and a rest.

I'm painting American guitars--might as well use an American gun!

The front of Alan's bass will remain under wraps until he gets it. I've sent him a couple of pictures and he's pleased with the results. Me, too!

Here's an interesting fact: Shooting a bass with the Binks, I'm actually saving paint, as it has a slightly smaller nozzle than the SATA (1.2 vs 1.4) This makes a substantial difference in consumption and waste. I used to use 6 ounces of varnish per double wet coat with the SATA; it's not slightly more than 4 with the Binks, a nearly 50% savings.

The 3M disposable cup system (called PPS or Paint Preparation System and available worldwide) saves 70% of the solvent used to clean the gun by eliminating the need to clean the cup.

Paul, what are you saying?
You mean you don't use a Sherwin-Williams paintbrush? :-)

Why would he, when you can do a better job (with less waste!) using a toothbrush? Image

I need to polish it up and take some better photos; I'll do that tomorrow.

That looks great Alan! How do you like the Hipshot bridge, and why did you choose to put one on your bass?
