Right on, David...I have a lot of great NJ memories, and plenty of bizarre ones, too...it's that kinda place. I did my first year of high school at Monmouth Regional HS, '69-'70...right off the Garden State Parkway at the Eatontown/Long Branch exit...seems like a million years ago...

I'm a little skeptical of Deep Purple now that Jon Lord retired. I'm okay with Ritchie Blackmore switching out with Steve Morse and however many other people played guitar, and while Ian Gillian is awesome, Glenn Hughes and David Coverdale sound great too (until Coverdale formed Whitesnake . . . ugh!) . . . but you really just can't replace Jon Lord! Who do they have on keyboards now that he's not there?

Don Airey is the new keyboardist! I'm not that familiar with his playing - he played for Ozzy on some of the early solo stuff, he was in Rainbow for an album (I think it was Down to Earth? Which also had Roger Glover on it - it was kind of the first pop Rainbow album...), but I've never heard him stretch out. I bet he's good though! I mean, Deep Purple are infamous for switching out band members - anybody remember Nick Simper?

Re: Starcastle - I can't be too harsh on them because I've been in my fair share of derivative bands. I like Gentle Giant too, though I haven't listened to them in a long time...

Airey is good, but he's trying too much to BE Jon Lord. The new Purple album is good, but they don't take any chances.
Nick Simper is still playing in an around London. He plays in a few bands. One is called "The Good Old Boys." I was in London a while back and was about to go into a pub and when I read the name of the band I though it was a southern rock tribute band so my wife and I kept walking. When I found out it was Simper's band I sure kicked myself. He is a very good bass player.
