Hey, I like the design and feel of the original Steinberger basses too! In fact, I almost took a luthier job with them back in '83-4 when they were still in Newburgh, NY.
And I agree with Aitch - I really doubt Ed is butchering real Ricks, but I also wouldn't be surprised at anything that guy would do in pursuit of what he routinely calls an "improvement" on other designs.

Alan, I just pulled up that pic, and was duly impressed... Wow, what a beautiful sight!-- I mean, dang...that tile floor of yours is fantastic!
It's a shame that ugly black thing got in the pic, maybe you could get it taken out with Photoshop ;^)

It ain't like Buttah, Alan.
It looks amputated.
But I do like the body shape!
A headstock balances a guitar, visually and physically.
Just my opinion. I've got lots of them, but only I take any of them even half-seriously.

Oh, but it IS like buttah...greasy and hard to wash off your hands. (Isn't "Buttah" the Brooklyn Buddha? And when a Brooklyn bass player plugs in his bass, he says it's Amputated...but I digress). Nah, I kid because I love! I gots me a headless bass too... it comes in handy for those Depeche Mode covers. Forget all that 70's Sex, Drugs, and Rock'n'roll...give me Asexuality, Valium, and Eyeliner, any day... Long live the 80's (ain't Martha Quinn hot??)

Jo, enjoy that tile while you can - it'll be gone in two weeks' time!
The only thing that I REALLY like about my BX5 is that it weighs nothing but it feels very solid.

I like my headless bass too, but I also have to admit it looks pretty dorky. It just doesn't seem proper playing alt.country or roots rock on one, for some reason. I see a trend where some companies are sort of exploring the headless concept again, but this time having a semblence of a headstock, even though it only serves a visual purpose. I guess this allows people to sort of look at the headless concept anew without it having too much of a retro-80's association. To me playing a headless bass feels like I'm holding a mere guitar... and I always thought Geddy Lee looked much odder than his usual self with that steinberger...

I used to have a BX-5 and currently have a BX-1:
One nice thing about it is you do not need double ball strings.
