Gary,
Jay Turser makes a few nice Hofner copies for less than $500.00 each.

Thanks Brian, I'll check it out.
What caught my attention on the Cort was that it is a solid body. I also thought the bridge looks much more substantial than the Hofner.

The Turser can be had for $200-$225 on ebay, new and without a case. I paid $275 with a case for mine. It is a really nice bass for the price. Boomy, hollow-body sound. Thinnest neck I've ever played. It really has a cool vibe.

I also have a Jay Turser, the hollow body JTB-134. Am very happy with it. Also short-scale and thin neck just like my Ibanez.
BTW, Epiphone also makes a violin bass (they say viola):

I had an Epi Viola Bass before I got the real thing, no comparison.

Here are a couple more of mine (three total, but no "regular" brown sunburst ones. The blue one is a limited edition, and the red one is a one-off, made for the former president of Boosey & Hawkes. If you want more detail, ask.

Paul, very nice. Love the inlays on the red bass. I don't believe I've ever seen a Hofner in either of those colors. Great photo!
How old are they?

They are around 1999-2000. The former president who had the red one, originally, asked Hofner to come up with different colors as a marketing scheme. They made at least three red prototypes that I've seen photos of, and this one was the fanciest. You can't tell from the photo, but the body top, back, and sides is fine birdseye maple. MOP inlays on the fingerboard and headstock, and modern gold-plated Schaller tuners. I've seen photos of a red-burst one with a neck like this one, and another solid red that had gold hardware and dot position markers. Anyway, Hofner and B&H decided to tone down the trim and produced either 50 or 100 (I'm not sure) each of blueburst and redburst. The blue one is one of the limited editions. The redburst ones have the same trim and features (standard neck, chrome hardware).

It's funny, the blue one in clouded sunlight (above) looks sky blue. In dim incandescent light it look really dark muddy blue. Reflections of the near ultraviolet, I presume.

Ronn, Paul, what kind of strings do you like to use on your Hofners? Thanks.

Jerry, I have factory stock "Höfner" brand flats on the two deluxes, and Höfner rounds on the Blue. I haven't played it in a gig situation, but the rounds do add a bit of growl.
