I haven't checked the wiring yet, but if a .007 cap can be removed to boast the horseshoe, then I might do it. Cutting through the mix, meaning punchier, tighter E string, yes, more like my 70's 4001's. To me, they sound much closer to Paul's than my C64. I just wish you guys could use one on a trial basis, then you would know exactly what I mean. It's wierd, but the V63 horseshoe is actually TOO hot and makes my pre=amp clip a little, but it has very tight punch in the low end. The "Silly Love Songs" sound is a good way to describe the sound I mean by cutting through the live mix.

Sounds like the C64S, if in fact equipped with a "disguised" Hi-Gain, might have been the ticket, no?

Would RIC let you order one if you decide that's the solution?

I think I know what you are talking about Ed. That is the reason when I bring a 4001 and a new 4003 to a gig, I always end up playing the new 4003. What sounds great in my room with a radio doesn't always sound good with a full band. I get most of my punch from the treble pickup, especially with flatwounds. That "Silly Love Songs" sound favored the treble pickup, even though it was a 70's pickup. The V63 basses have powerful horseshoes also, I always favored the treble pickup with them too. The modern pickups just have a lot more punch to them, more mid and bass, which corresponds to less treble and more mid punch. If there is an inline cap if you bridge that with some wire that would definitely make a difference, the V63's didn't have one though. I agree with Garry, a high gain would probably be what you are looking for.

I agree, a 70's treble hi-gain would most likely do the trick, but boy I really hate changing anything on the C64. The fact that I will buy bass any bass (even @ alomost $2000), that gets closer to "his" and I'm 51 tells how sick I'm about Ric basses in general. I actually have 7 other Ric's that I prefer the tone on over the C64, and I even prefer my 4003SB tone over the C64. I suppose it is the early to middle 70's flavor that I prefer and being a lead singer, I just love that tone to be hearing while singing. My original 74 4001MG has been modified with Bartolini"s (both bass and treble) and that bass is just amazing and it is SILENT under all electrical conditions. I would love to post pictures here on the Rick forum, but somehow I can't get the pixels small enough? Someone could suggest if they would like. I have some great stories that go along with every Rick I own and maybe you guys would love to hear a couple? I have bought and sold at least 30 or so Rick's since the early eighties, keeping only those that have THE TONE that I so desire. Oh yeah, to answer Garry, I use an Ampeg SVT III rackmount amp with either two 15' Teil cabs with PV Black Widows, or one 4-10 Legion cab, depending on space and type of gig (hall, club, outside) gig that I'm doing. I also bleed through the PA on the same slider as the kick drum. Sound bites and info on my band of 24 years can be seen and heard @ classof66.com. Garry are you the guy from Australia that I got a surround from a while back? Don't I still owe you for it?

Hello, I am new here (sort of) again. Anyway, I like the 4001C64. I got to try a 4001C64 FG today and it was the first time I ever have seen one in the flesh. I plugged her in and did a riff of "Heart of the sunrise" and it had that sound! It seemed to have a sweetness to it. It does have a little less output but more treble than a V63 or CS. It still sounded like it had plenty of output, more than a 70's 4001. It did have a little string buzz problem, but it probably just needs to be set up. I have to say I don't like the reverse head stock, it's kind of ugly... I think it would be cool if they reissued the 4001CS(like they did the Tom Petty model as the 660) Maybe call it the 4001C65...and issue it in different colors but with the walnut headwings showing. That would be the best bass they ever could make I think!

BTW Ed Dupont, I don't know if you remember me, but If you are the same guy, I bought a 4004 Cheyenne I from you about 6 years ago in 1997, You posted an ad at the music connection. I've still got it and the payment slip. I love that bass, It's a keeper...

I'm the one who bought your JG 4003S on eBay and turned it into an "Instant 4001S". You can see the "Chop Job" here.

I love the way it sounds with VPU's.
