Bob, I am a hack bass player at best, and I was able to play it with no probs after a couple of hours.

Well I'll find out in probably two days, it shipped out from Va. today and I'm in Ma. I might just white out the dots all together. Don't the off-note dots drive you nuts Dave?

when you play any fretless you slide up to where the fret should be not play in the middle of the fret spacing like a fretted..the dots are there to show you where that is..ive been only playing fretless since 1976..thats my instrument..thats where you play..why blank them out?..of course tho im a soloist a fusion player so when your playing 16th an 32 notes as a solo its nice to be able to check yourself up a lil..i have 6 fretlesses ..2 factory 4 i ripped the frets outta..my fav is my 4002 fl..its marked...beleive me its not an advantage to have the dots..i play upright as well..no dots there or none on my coronado 67 fretless or pj..

I've also been playing fretless since 77, learned on a Candy Apple Red 68 P bass factory fretless that I sold like an idiot and that's my point, on the new ones the dots are not on the notes, they are between them, the binding appears to be from a regular 4003. I play upright also and would rather have no dots than dots between notes because if they're there I'm going to automatically look at them and they will throw me off. We'll see though, maybe I can learn to ignore them.

ohh they dont have the dots where the fret should be???..jeeez that is bad..mine on the 4002 are where the fret normally is so you play just to the headstock side of them..giggle i still have the old hagstrom i first ripped the frets outta after i heard heavy weather an jacos debut album..i never filled them in so i just played up to them..

yeah if I had known that I would have looked for an early 90's FL before I paid for this one a year and a half ago. I've had several including the 72 FL I have now and all the old ones had dots on every fret which I didn't really like either, I like the old Fender way: 3rd, 5th, 7th etc.

Well, the day that the Rick Gods bestow upon me a fixer-upper V63, Mr. Curmudgeon may be called upon to fashion a lined toothless replacement board. I've a minimal amount of pride and training wheels will fit my bike right nicely! Image

No time to post, but got the BB 4003FL today. A couple of observations: Color is really nice I think but only had about 5 minutes to look at it and play it today, set up is good although I will tweak it a little (was set up with Pyramid Golds), it has the cap in it with the push-pull knob. If this neck is any indication of the new 4003's it's a good sign as it is a thin neck and plays and feels great, much thinner than the 98 I had and my Seagreen. Only one negative, those off note side dots have to go. I haven't plugged it in yet that will come Saturday, gotta work a double tomorrow, good night.
