.. but if you know that adding 1000k ohm pots heavily boosts the treble why would you abandon (then continually slam) a bass you say looks stunning and plays great when a $15 mod could at least partially cure the dead tone you hate.
I didn't spend nearly £950 Sterling on an instrument which when modified from its original state at the cost of yet another 15-quid; would only sound *partially* good.
You pay that much for a bass, it sounds good, full stop, period.

I've put it down to the Walnut and the HB1s, however I will stress the HB1s don't perform too badly with the Laredo.
The Cheyenne and the HB1s pair badly though, IMO.
I should have tried a toaster/hi-gain combination, really. But being so unenthused with my new, gorgeous, delightfully-sexy-yet-****-sounding Cii, I sold it and bought a ruby Jazz Bass.
And Brian, one thing I do like about Ciis is their looks... they do look spot on fanastic.

I bet a 4004 would sound great with 2 4003 high gain pickups and with 250k ohm pots wired vvt ...

Thats my next step. I always use D'Addario nickle rounds on my 4004. I think Im gonna try D'Addario steels, or Dean Markley blue steels.

When the strings on my 4004Cii get tired, I'm gonna do the same Scott.

I tried the Blue Steels also and though the tones sounded more pure, they were as Barry said, vague, or polite, or indistinct, or like you had to strain to hear what the notes were.

I surprised that you guys were so dissatisfied with Blue Steels. Maybe they have changed since the last time I bought a set, which was several years ago. Sometimes you you have to make a pickup height adjustment when you changes types of strings to get the right sound.
