In my day job, we have designed and built major data centers for people like NFL Films and Vanguard, to name but a few. Although a different scale, the precautions taken that Mr. Hall described are the same.

This may work fine for you but it certainly won't for us. Also, we trust our own competence far better than we do some of the big, well-known outside providers that have managed to take our systems down in the distant past. Let's not forget that this is SBC/AT&T that succeeded in knocking us out this time, for example.
We've had 100% up time (other than for planned maintenance) for several years now.
By the way, we left

I was trenching my old backyard about 12 years ago and cut everyone's cable TV. Which was ok with me because I had satellite.

Sorry we ****** you off John, but it's good to hear from you.
I guess my pidgeon thing wasn't that funny. Oh well! I laughed when I was typing it. In fact, I'm laughing again.

SBC and AT&T can't figure out how to bring DSL into my place of residence ... well they did when they slammed me ... I had Earthlink dsl and then SBC slammed me and took over the account ... so I canceled the sbc dsl ... then my earthlink dsl wouldn't work ... and SBC and AT&T can't seem to make dsl work on my phone line now ... at first they said Earthlink still had "codes" on the phone line then they said my phone line is a "shared" line ... one of my coworkers had a similar problem with SBC and AT&T ... they gave her a lame excuse about the computer data from 2 servers needing to be merged ... I think their phone support people just make up stuff on the fly ...

I work plenty of part time jobs directing traffic and providing security on road construction/repair projects so I have seen my share of severed lines for phone, electric, water, fiber optic and, my personal favorite, sewer. It is often the construction company's fault but it is also quite a bit of the time the fault of the surveyor or a mistake in the blueprints of where things should be. It should never happen but with the complicated infrastructure I'm shocked that it doesn't happen far more often.

So are you the policeman Paul was referring to in another post?
I used to be a cop in SF. So I wasn't sure if he meant you or me.

I didn't notice Paul mentioned it.....but yep, I'm guilty of not going to college and taking a civil service job.

Nothing wrong with that Brian. Where are you on the job?

Cleveland Ohio. I just reached my 10th year so I still have a while to go.
Why aren't you a cop anymore? Bigger and better things or just sick of it? Hopefully nothing more serious.
