Jaco's theme from Barney Miller was played on Flatwounds?

Wow, would not have guessed that. Seems a bit trebly to my undiscerning ears.

Also, from a post above, does Flea use flats?

According to the man himself, I don't think so.

"I've always used GHS Bass Boomers and I'll never change."-Flea

Gauges: 45-65-85-105. Flea won't settle for less thatn the tried and true formula of GHS Bass Boomers. The low E string has a special combination of stainless steel and nickel plate for the added strength and power. Roundwound.

Recently Flea has been using vintage Jazz Basses with flatwounds, but according to the September 2006 Guitar World's Bass Guitar he is rumored to be switching back to his signature Modulus bass and signature GHS Boomers for the tour.

I can't belive George played bass on "Taxman." Listen to the bridge. George never played a six string that fast. Let alone play and instrument that was un-common to him.

The bassline on the intro to the TV show Barney Miller is another fave. A friend of mine's dad played the bass on that session.

Years ago (can't remember much about it) someone used to ask me to play the theme from Barney Miller all the time. I think it was at a band rehearsal or something like that.

Any early Chicago stuff with Peter Cetera has great flatwound bass lines played with a pick, he was a great bass player with a great sound. Very chunky sound.

I agree. Cetera was underrated as a bass player IMHO because the main focus was on his vocals. But his early Chicago bass lines were some very nice work.

Getting in late on this, but my Jazz Bass nails JPJ's stuff with GHS Boomers.

Which kind of flatwounds strings do you recommend for a v63 to get a Beatles tone?

With A Little Help From My Friends / Penny Lane / and that kind of stuff

Cheers.
