The thingy was not always necessary. Early 4001s do indeed have more or less straight out headstocks. The one on my '63 has taken a slight forward angle over the years from the string tension. The A string will pop out of the nut if I hit it too hard. Some time in the late 60's or early 70's the head was angled back about 2.5 degrees. Later in about 1980 the angle was increased to 4.5 degrees for the 4003.

You can see the changing angles here. On the left is a '63 4001, the next one is an '80 4001, and the last two are '85 and '80 4003.

Jeffrey, I played bass on everything except Sad Girlfriend and Alone In My Head. In the first case, it was because it started as a song for a Kenny Howes album. For the second, it was Matt, as we had originally stereotyped him more as a bass player when he was a visiting artist to the studio back when we wrote this. (That's the only song he plays on.) Kenny also played five notes on Stop Start Again because it was a part lifted from another song that didn't make the CD.
The CD copy you have also omits the lyric credits and BMI note; that's now been corrected. * is Kenny, ** is me, and the one *** song is all three of us.

I had noticed that Chris's voice thinned out a bit on the higher register stuff on the Concpiracy DVD(great DVD by the way), but then I thought he sounded stronger on "You By my Side" at the gig. Now I know why as he dropped the tuning a step.

I now have a way to save and convert Youtube videos to mpeg4. I can't find a place on the forum to give the details.

My headstock on my '68 is straight, too.
Never noticed that...

My 64 bends forward slightly at present and that's with 40-95 D'Addario's...
The E string is barely situated in the nut...

That might be necessary some day Scott. Either that or retire it completely. Hopefully not in my lifetime though.
