All the Gibson guys played short scale basses too, like Jack Bruce and Felix Pappalardi. The Gibson Eb-2's were med. (32 in.) scale, a lot of people played those and Epiphones (med?) also.

Jerry, sorry for the tardy reply. I have Miroslav Vitous listed as one of the bassists on Weather Report's Mysterious Traveller CD. His particular tracks are not identified.

Nigel....Are you being sarcastic? Of course I've heard of Paul McCartney. He just isn't an influence as far as bass playing goes.Wings, flatwound strings and pop music was NOT where I was at in '76 when I started playing. I did however leave out Geddy Lee. Now that was an oversight!

Dane, I think Nigel was just referring to Paul McCartney being a famous person (other than Bill Wyman and Danny Partridge) who plays a short scale bass. He wasn't talking about your influences.

my influences ... Peter Tork and Danny Partridge ... well not really ...

How did Bill Wyman get listed here ... The Stones used to use studio musicians for bass on some of their old albums ...

anyway my influences ... 1st McCartney, 2nd Chris Squire, 3rd John Enthwhistle, 4th Geddy Lee ... honorable mention ... John Wetton, Tony Levin ...

What was the first Monkees song you learned Jeff?

Bill Wyman played on all the Stones albums during his tenure, there were no other studio musicians on bass. And he used his homemade fretless on most of the songs.

Jeff Rath-- I'm totally with Dave Westheimer concerning Wyman's bass playing on the Stones' albums. Where did you hear about these unnamed studio musicians who played in place of Wyman? I have never heard that rumor *ever* in my life, and I consider myself *extremely* well-read concerning the history of The Rolling Stones up through their "Exile On Main Street" period. (Don't care too much for 'em after then, however.)

A long time ago, Mick Jagger himself acknowledged that some bass parts were not recorded by Wyman. The most significant example is the "It's only rock'n'roll" album, where Mick Taylor played bass on "Fingerprint file", Keith Richards on "If you can't rock me", and Willie Weeks on the "It's only rock'n'roll" song.
As far as I remember, since 1968 there was at least one track per album where bass was not played by Wyman.
All the best,
JL

I know Keith played bass occasionally but I have never hear of any studio guys playing with them, and on the old albums the players are usually listed. Once in a while Kieth would play a song, but the sound is very different, he used a pick a got a much more trebly tone. By the way, Ron Wood used to play bass with The Jeff Beck Group, and maybe The Faces, he was a great bass player, check out Beckola.
