Just noticed this thread. I hope you're feeling better soon Paul! Stay away from that water down in So. Cal!

So how can a guy in his early 20's avoid a stone? My dad's never had one, but I don't know if it's a genetic thing or not. I remember reading once to avoid carbonated beverages as much as possible.

Yikes, Paul! You've been helping me all week and I had no idea of what you've been going through. Please accept a heartfelt thank you, as well as my utmost respect for the way you are handling excruciating pain---by helping others! You are a class act.

Maybe for a laugh you should check out my personal quote... you may beg to differ!

John B., my husband suffered the misery of kidney stones a couple of years ago, and he opted for an herbal cure rather than the surgery.... BTW, the herbs DID work! The research we did online and from other sources indicated that a person should drink lots of water, preferably with the minerals and chemical additives filtered out, although distilled water is the best. As an extra preventative, both Marc and I drink at least one glass of water a day with about 2-3 tablespoons of organic raw unfiltered apple cider vinegar stirred into it. Initially I thought it was awful, but now I actually crave it by midafternoon. In theory at least, a diet with foods high in malic acid will help to dissolve any calcium deposits that may be forming in the kidneys. Herbalists also recommend abstaining from caffeine and alcohol, but I enjoy my morning coffee (I don't think I could ever be conscious without it), and an occasional drink....

Thanks, Mark, but believe me, the pain was managed when I was writing. It's been almost a week of on-again-off-again pain, with trips to the ER when I needed a dose of something a bit stronger to help manage it. I've been back at my bench the last two evenings and it does seem that the worst is over.

Melissa, I've no problem with the vinegar/water thing; I used to use a thing called "Cyclone Cider" to keep cold symptoms at bay. It's a concentrated mix of apple cider vinegar, red pepper, and onion and garlic extracts that you drop onto your tongue. Yow! I actually got to like the stuff, although it really tests your friends' stamina, as you could imagine, I'm sure. So the vinegar in water would be OK.

I'm off caffeine for almost a year now (migraine headache factor!) and have never been a big drinker anyway. Judy, who is George Boccanfuso's (Kenposurf, bandmate and Forum member) wife, is a renal dietician, and she's got me covered with some very comprehensive reading material and diet suggestions.

The first stone I had--back in 1/2004, 10 months before my first Rick!--was tedious but much easier to navigate than this one. So of course I'm determined that this be my last.

So, thanks for all the great feelings and handholding, guys and gals--it's been a whole lot easier with you Rickenfolk in my corner!

John- No soda, lots of water. For a few years I was up to 1.5 gallons a day. Just carried the gallon jug around with me at work.

Just about fully recovered, George. I plan to BE THERE.

So....Paul makes it to practice! We got right to it with some conversation here and there but it had been awhile sense the band was whole so it was mostly about the music. Because of that I will now say Paul, it's not only good to see you back playing I'm also glad to see you looking fit! It was obvious you were happy to be here as we were to see you. One cool thing about having Paul in the group is he keep a lot of his stuff at my home studio. His new Dual Showman that he got from me lives here..so nothing changed for me there..plus I now have a Fender Jag and a Mustang on the property...hey Paul go drink a glass of water dude..good to have ya back.
