I've come home ..
It seems like you guys love all my bass heroes too.
Foxton, Burnell, McCartney, Lemmy
My favorite riff is the opening riff from 'Ace of Spades' by Motörhead. Just plain simple but oh so powerfull.
I used to get the same sound with my '74 4001 through a Marshall 100bass top but it kept ruining the speakers, until I ruined the amp.

How about Dinosaur Jr.'s "In A Jar"? Or even "Little Furry Things"? The first 3 Dino albums w/Lou Barlow are all Rick, all the time. The live versions of "Does It Float", "Bulbs of Passion" (both from the BBC sessions CD), and "Quest" (from the BBC stuff, but available on bootleg only) are some of the best distorted Rick -tones ever,IMHO.
Here's a funny link on Lou Barlow's website-

Also, this link is to a totally badass Dino Jr "lost" track, a monstrous (in a good way!!!) cover of a song from Neil Young's 1st record-dig the Rick on this thing!!!

My favorite Rick bass riff? That's an easy one.
On the album 'Kimono My House' (Sparks, 1974), Martin Gordon's 7-note riff halfway through the song 'Falling In Love With Myself Again'. The 4001 bass at its formidable best.

My favourite is McCartney's 'Silly Love Songs' - a silly love song built on a bass riff that's superb: all the pop, bounce and bottom end that a Ric bass produces better than any other.
Another is the Cure's 'Love Cats' - - but I'm not sure if it's played on a Ric.
Cheers, LK

Love Cats, the first Cure I bought (a 45!) I presumed was done on an upright.

For what it's worth the video shows an upright being played.

Have to second the vote for Silly Love Songs, another example of McCartney's great gift for playing a melodic bass part! One of the best examples of that! Kind of a silly song, but it DOES have a great bass line!

I know Love Cats was written by Robert Smith on a bass, another example of great bassline melodies. Haven't seen the video, always assumed it was a Ric...

I think Smith writes a lot of songs on a fender VI bass(Baritone ?)I love the bass line on "Sinking".

Has any one mentioned Tobacco Road by the British band The Nashville Teens? The guy is playing so hard on that strings the de-tune on being struck. But it goes into a nice walk on the bridge ("but it's home, the only life I've ever known..."
